Tonga vs Samoa Prediction – Rugby League World Cup 2026

Tonga and Samoa will do battle in the final round of the Rugby League World Cup group stage on Sunday in one of the most highly anticipated international fixtures in recent memory.

A win here sends either side straight into the semi-finals, keeping alive hopes of a first World Cup title for a Pacific nation.

For Tonga, victory would mark their first semi-final appearance since 2017. For Samoa, it would build on their run to the 2022 final and continue a resurgence that has made them one of the most feared sides in the international game.

Tonga arrived at this decider with a 2-0 record. They opened with a 30-12 win over England, then followed it up with a 36-0 demolition of Lebanon. Both results showcase a side building momentum at the right time.

Samoa's form has been even more emphatic. They thrashed France 78-4 in Round 1 before putting 64 points on Papua New Guinea in Round 2, winning 64-6. Samoa currently sit top of the group on points differential, with Tonga in second.

Whichever way this one goes, expect a physical, high stakes battle between two nations with everything to play for and a sell-out crowd roaring on every tackle.

Tonga vs Samoa Prediction and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

What a way to wrap Round 3 of the RLWC and the entire group stage.

Tonga and Samoa are both unbeaten, both on four points, and the winner will finish on top of the combined Pools B and C table.

England will be watching closely too. A Samoa win would effectively end their tournament, while a Tonga win would leave second place to be decided on points difference.

Samoa have scored more points than anyone at the tournament, piling on 142 and conceding just 10 in wins over France and PNG.

Sua Fa'alogo already has six tries in two games, while Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow crossed twice against the Kumuls.

Tonga have been every bit as impressive in their own way, beating England 30-12 in Perth before keeping Lebanon scoreless in a 36-0 win last Friday.

Recent history leans Samoa's way, though. Toa Samoa won the 2022 World Cup quarter-final between these two 20-18 and beat Tonga 34-6 at Suncorp Stadium in last year's Pacific Championships.

We're tipping Samoa to make it three on the trot over their Pacific rivals in what has all the makings of the game of the tournament.

Betting tip: Samoa.

First Try Scorer Prediction

With six tries in two games so far this tournament, we simply can’t go past Samoan speedster Sua Fa'alogo here.

While Tonga have plenty of candidates for this market in the shape of Tolu Koula, Lehi Hopoate, Jojo Fifita, and Leka Halasima who all have serious speed and finishing power across their backline, Fa’alogo is simply too hot to ignore at the moment.

Betting tip: Sua Fa'alogo.

Over/Under Prediction

The case for the under appears the more straightforward for us in this high-stakes showdown between two sides that respect each other deeply.

Tonga have conceded just 12 points across two matches, and when the Sipi Tau hit the field with a semi-final on the line, expect intensity to compress scoring.

Samoa's group-stage numbers are eye-catching, but those came against France and Papua New Guinea. Tonga is a different proposition entirely.

Under the preset line of 45.5 total match points seems the play with a bruising forward battle likely to keep the scoreboard honest.

Betting tip: Under 45.5 total match points.

Line Prediction

With a 2.5-point spread on offer, we like Samoa to edge this one in a tight arm-wrestle that could easily go either way.

Expect Tonga's forwards to dominate early territory, but Samoa's attacking depth should prove the difference in the final quarter.

Backing Samoa -2.5, with the margin unlikely to stretch beyond a converted try either way, seems the value play for us.

Betting tip: Samoa (-2.5) line.
