State of Origin 2023 Game 2 Tips

21/06/2023|Joel Caine|NRL Expert Predictions & Tips

With the series on the line, NSW heads to Brisbane with two debutants and a new-look halves combination.

Eels playmaker Mitchell Moses has won the vacant NSW No.7 jersey race, beating out Nicho Hynes and Adam Reynolds to line up alongside Jarome Luai in a partnership few saw coming.

Reece Robson and Stefano Utoikamanu will make their bow for the Blues from the bench as Brad Fittler looks to add more defensive resolve to his side.

For Queensland, there are a few forced changes through injury, with Xavier Coates, Jeremiah Nani and Moeaki Fotuaika coming in for Selywn Cobbo, Tom Gilbert and Jai Arrow.

After their Game 1 ambush, the Maroons enter Game 2 as favourites in the Head-to-Head (H2H) market.

Can NSW defy the odds and, as well as their recent record at Suncorp Stadium, force a decider down south?

Or will Queensland wrap up the series at home and condemn NSW to yet another State of Origin defeat?

Our State of Origin Game 2 prediction is below.

Tipped QLD Player to Watch

Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow

There are no two ways about it; the man known as “the Hammer” lit up the Blues in Game 1.

Playing out of position at centre, the Dolphins’ fullback turned in a game-breaking performance for the Maroons in only his second-ever Origin appearance.

He scored two tries, including the match winner, made one line break and was the Queenslander who ran for the most metres.

Selected ahead of QLD veteran and serial Origin performer Dane Gagai, Tabuai-Fidow more than repaid the faith shown in him by Slater.

The question is can he do it again in Game 2? At home, in front of packed Suncorp Stadium, where he dominates for the Dolphins every week, we’re not betting against him.

Tipped NSW Player to Watch

Mitchell Moses

Seemingly out of nowhere, Mitchell Moses has won the race to be the new Blues No.7.

The halves spot vacated by Nathan Cleary due to injury was considered to be a three-horse race between Nicho Hynes, Cody Walker and Adam Reynolds.

About a week out from the team announcement, Moses’ name was floated in the media due to his impressive kicking game, and then he made sure his name was well and truly up in lights as Brad Fittler was picking his team.

On the eve of the squad announcement, the 28-year-old dropped a masterclass against the Bulldogs to book his ticket to Brisbane.

While he wasn’t most pundits’ first choice, he is a noted favourite of Fittler. This is due to their time together with Lebanon during the 2017 World Cup when Fittler was head coach and Moses his first-choice halfback.

There is no doubting Moses’ ability as a footballer, he is an elite game manager and possesses a giant boot, but can he finally deliver on the big stage?

He was anonymous for Parramatta in last year’s Grand Final as they crashed to defeat against Penrith, and he lost his one (and so far only) Origin game for NSW back in 2021.

Getting called up with the series on the line at Suncorp Stadium is about as close to getting thrown to the wolves as possible.

Can Moses defy the odds, finally stand up on the big stage and deliver NSW an unlikely victory? Or will he simply be the next in a long line of NSW risks that have failed to pay off? We’re going to find out one way or another on June 21st.

State of Origin Game 2 Final Tips & Predictions

Queensland entered Game 1 of this year’s State of Origin series as underdogs. That is certainly not the case for Game 2.

Suncorp Stadium is an absolute graveyard for the Blues, and it will take a truly remarkable performance from Freddy’s boys to keep the series alive in front of 50,000 screaming Queenslanders.

Two huge factors are working in NSW’s favour, however. The first is their record in Game 2 during Fittlers reign.

They are a perfect five from five in Game 2 with Freddy at the helm, although only one of those has been at Suncorp Stadium.

The other is Latrell Micthell. The Rabbitohs fullback missed Game 1 due to injury, and no one loves the big occasion more than Trell Mit.

Keep an eye on the NSW centre as he does everything he can to keep his state in this series.

For the hosts, the usual protagonists of Munster, Cherry-Evans and Ben Hunt will likely be the ones to do most of the damage.

Outside backs Reece Walsh and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow are also primed for big games on the patch of grass where they dominate most weeks for the Broncos and Dolphins, respectively.

Sugars Tips

Outcome: Blues 1-12

The market has overreacted far too much here, IMO. Slow start for the Blues, then realistically dominated for the next hour. Statistically, the Blues dominated almost everywhere except the scoreboard. They won comfortably in Run Metres, Post Contact Metres, Tackle Breaks, Kick Return Metres, pass receipts etc. These typically would amount to a huge win. There was no Latrell that night, either.

Anytime Tryscorer: 1st, 2nd or 3rd Try Murray Taulagi

Left Wingers at Suncorp have enjoyed a great run. Of the last 13 Origins there, the left Winger has scored at least one try 11 times.

Combine Tryscorer: Too & Crichton combine for two or more tries

Luai cops a lot of unnecessary criticism. The bottom line is whilst he is an agitator, he is a very fine player. Jerome is the Blues conductor on the left side. He has played Origin six times; in this time, the Blues have scored 26 tries, 6 in the Middle, six on the right and 14 on the left (His Side)!!!!!

Man of the Match: Jerome Luai. In Cleary's absence, if the Blues are to win, I expect him to step up as the Alpha.

Same Game Multi: Blues +6.5, Too Anytime Tryscorer, Taulagi or Tabuai Fidow to Score

State of Origin Game 2 Odds
