Try July may be over, but there’s still plenty to celebrate as we move into the final month of the NRL regular season.

Last week there were plenty of talking points, from four-try hauls to suspect send-offs and everything in between.

As the finals approach, it’s all still to play for, with everything from the minor premiership to the wooden spoon still up for grabs.

Round 24 shapes to be the first of four crucial game weeks that are not to be missed.

With so much action on the horizon, there’s never been a better time to check out our expert NRL round 24 tips and predictions.

Manly Sea Eagles v Penrith Panthers Prediction

Thursday, August 10, 7:50pm AEST – Brookvale Oval

Round 24 gets underway when the Manly Sea Eagles welcome the all-conquering Penrith Panthers to Brookvale Oval on Friday night.

The Sea Eagles are still in contention for the eight, just. However, after their loss to the Roosters last week they will effectively need to win all their remaining games to make it.

Their unlikely finals charge could be over before it even begins as the Panthers are back to their best, sitting atop the standings as they gear up for an unprecedented third straight NRL crown.

They effortlessly brushed aside the Melbourne Storm last time out to send an ominous warning to the rest of the competition.

The only way we see them dropping points between now and the end of the season is if they deliberately rest players and with the minor premiership still in the balance, we don’t see that happening this week.

Penrith should win and win well to all but end Manly’s season.

Sugar’s final thoughts: Coach Cleary and his son Nathan are experts at targeting a team's lineup change or any inexperience. Last week he went hunting for Marion Seve’s side (with success) in just his fourth game of the year.

This week they may have eyes on the side of Raymond Tuaimalo-Veaga who plays just the sixth game of his career.

Sugar’s tip: Brian To’o two or more tries.

Cronulla Sharks v Gold Coast Titans Prediction

Friday, August 11, 6:00pm AEST – Shark Park

Fresh off upsetting the Rabbitohs, the Cronulla Sharks welcome the Gold Coast Titans to Shark Park as they look to get some momentum going at the back end of the season.

Any doubts over their place in the eight and the form of marquee man Nicho Hynes were quickly dispelled against the Bunnies as they dropped a first half masterclass on their more fancied opponents.

Their adversaries this week, the Titans, battled bravely against the high-flying Warriors despite playing a man down for most of the contest thanks to a very soft send off for Mo Fotuaika.

Young fullback Jayden Campbell once again showed why he needs to be in the starting team every week, scoring a runaway try to level proceedings in the second half.

If they are to upset the Sharkies, Campbell will have to be heavily involved. However, Shark Park has been nicknamed “the Bermuda Triangle” – where teams go to disappear.

We think that this week it will be the good ship Gold Coast sailing into the abyss - Cronulla to pick up another valuable win as they look to secure their spot in the eight.

Sugar’s final thoughts: I’m expecting a big win for the Sharkies in this one. Sharks 13+, Sharks Pick Your Own Line etc - I’m keen on all of the above.

If you’re looking for some value for your Same Game Mulits consider any left sided Titans player such as Khan-Periera, David Fifita or Brian Kelly.

David Fifita draws so much attention, it’s a job too big for one player, which provides many opportunities around him. For context the Titans have scored 41 tries on their left side compared to just 13 scored on their right side.

Sugar’s tip: SGM - Sharks 13+ & David Fifita or Khan-Periera Anytime Tryscorer.

Brisbane Broncos v Parramatta Eels Prediction

Friday, August 11, 8:00pm AEST – The Gabba

With the Women’s World Cup taking place at Suncorp Stadium this month, the Brisbane Broncos welcome the Parramatta Eels to the Gabba on Friday night.

Both of these sides got up last week, but it was Brisbane who were the far more convincing of the two.

The Broncos bucked the Cowboys off their back in an entertaining clash in Townsville, while the Eels rallied late to sneak past the lowly Dragons by a single converted try.

This is a must win for Parramatta, as they find themselves in the log jam for the last two finals places.

Their recent record in Brisbane actually bodes well for the Blue and Gold, they won 53-6 against Broncos there just last season.

However, that was a very different Broncos team and a very different Eels team. The Broncos didn’t have the services of one Reece Walsh then.

The fact they beat the Cowboys away last week without Adam Reynolds, who should be back on deck this week, makes Brisbane an easy tip in this one.

Sugar’s final thoughts: The try scoring scales most certainly tip to the right hand side of the field for the men from Brisbane. The reason behind this is it’s Reece Walsh's favourite side.

Selwyn Cobbo is one you can anchor in your SGMs. If you are looking to get really funky though, Pat Carrigan, who hadn’t scored for 77 straight matches has now scored two weeks in a row, he couldn’t make it three could he?

Sugar’s tip: Selwyn Cobbo Anytime Try Scorer.

South Sydney Rabbitohs v St George Illawarra Dragons Prediction

Saturday, August 12, 3:00pm AEST – Barlow Park

Cairns’ Barlow Park will play host to the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the St George Dragons this week in the latest NRL road trip.

The Dragons were valiant in defeat against the Eels last week, with tear away winger Mikaele Ravalawa finding the line on four separate occasions.

Still, his efforts weren’t enough as his side went down by six points in an entertaining affair.

The Bunnies game last week was much more one-sided, they were blown off the park early by the Sharks and left themselves too much to do, despite being much improved in the second stanza.

Although they were disappointing against Cronulla, the Bunnies attacking quality was there for all to see and with so much more to play for than the Dragons, they should have enough weapons at their disposal to get home in this one.

Sugar’s final thoughts: This game just screams points. On the one hand, you have the Bunnies who in their last 10 matches have conceded an average of 28 points per game.

On the other, you have a traveling Dragons team who are yet to win an away game all year. This could be a real loosey-goosey affair. The Dragons left side also remains a major problem, so this could be a big day out for young gun Tyrone Munro.

Sugar’s tip: SGM - Over Total Match Points & Tyrone Munro Anytime Tryscorer.

Wests Tigers v New Zealand Warriors Prediction

Saturday, August 12, 5:30pm AEST – FMG Stadium

Ok, we’re actually starting to feel bad for the Tigers now. Not only did they put in a performance worthy of a win against the Raiders last week, but now they’ve got a home game in New Zealand, against New Zealand.

Yes, this scheduling decision by the club seems to align with all the other decisions the club have made in recent times – utterly baffling.

For the Warriors it doesn’t get much better, flying high in third, playing bottom of the table and getting to play “away” in your own back garden.

Oh, did we forget to mention Shaun Johnson is playing the best footy of his career and is all but a lock for the Dally M this year? – What a story. Warriors to win this one at a canter.

Sugar’s final thoughts: This game is in Hamilton NZ and it’s a sell out. The Warriors are big favourites and deservedly so.

To find some value here, Wayde Egan has a real penchant for throwing a flat pass for a hard running forward near the line. They have scored plenty of tries from this play and Barnett, Harris, Ford, Curran and Fonua-Blake are all chances of finding the line.

Fonua-Blake in particular has been a huge beneficiary from this play. He’s scored six tries already this year (a personal best) and all bar one of these came inside the first 30 minutes.

Sugar’s tip: Addin Fonua-Blake 1st, 2nd or 3rd Try.

Sydney Roosters v The Dolphins

Saturday, August 12, 7:35pm AEST – Allianz Stadium

It seems like an age ago the Dolphins kicked off their inaugural NRL campaign with an upset win against the, at the time, competition favourites the Sydney Roosters.

Fast forward 24 rounds and the two are set to tango once more. Although things couldn’t be more different these days for both sides. The hype has subsided around the Phins after a bright start to the season and the Roosters are the furthest thing from premiership contenders.

They did win last week however, despite having Nathan Brown set off as soon as he entered the field. This keeps their hopes of making the finals alive, just.

Where there’s life, there’s hope and down in Sydney, we’re backing them to get the best of Bennett’s boys who will finish their first season in the big time playing for pride and pride alone.

Sugar’s final thoughts: In recent years teams on the road who are out of the running against teams in the mix have proven to be very ordinary betting propositions.

They tend to get beaten and beaten well. The Roosters are alive (just) and don’t just need to win, they need to win big to have any chance of playing finals footy.

The most motivated player at the Dolphins right now is Jamayne Isaako. He is currently the NRL Leading Points Scorer and will be keen to keep adding to his tally.

Sugar’s tip: SGM - Roosters 13+ & Isaako Anytime Try Scorer.

Melbourne Storm v Canberra Raiders Prediction

Sunday, August 13, 2:00pm AEST – AAMI Park

Melbourne will be looking to bounce back at home this week as they welcome the Raiders to AAMI Park.

The Storm were simply outclassed by the purrfect Panthers last week, with the absence of Jahrome Hughes plain for all to see.

The Raiders on the other hand got the best of the luckless Tigers last week, although only just. However, a win’s a win and that sees them draw level with the Storm on 30 competition points.

The result of this one will go a long way to determining who finishes fourth. Hughes is still in doubt for this one and his potential participation could well determine the outcome of this match.

Keep an eye on the late mail, if Jahrome takes the field we recommend backing the Storm, if not, the Raiders present good value for the win, especially considering their recent record in the Victorian capital.

Sugar’s final thoughts: The Storm back at AAMI Park where they have had some big wins this year. They haven’t lost there since round two against the Bulldogs. Not overly confident here, but my gut feeling is a big Storm win.

Sugar’s tip: Storm 13+

Newcastle Knights v Canterbury Bulldogs Prediction

Sunday, August 13, 4:05pm AEST – McDonald Jones Stadium

Closing out the action this week are the nuclear Knights who welcome a fully rested Bulldogs side to the Hunter Valley on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle are simply explosive at the moment. Kalyn Ponga’s headgear may as well be a crown, because he is in full messiah mode.

He’s led his side to five wins on the spin, including last week’s epic 30-28 thriller against the Dolphins in Perth.

They’ve gone from also-rans to one of the form teams in the competition and genuine smokeys in the space of a month.

The Bulldogs can rest up as much as they want, they’re not winning this one.

Sugar’s final thoughts: There are two guys in head gear at the moment who have caught fire for Newcastle. That’s Ponga and Hastings.

They quite often pair up together and usually on the left. Greg Marzhew has scored five weeks in a row and Bradman Best has scored in four straight matches against the Bulldogs – including a hattrick when they last met to cannon him into Origin selection. Act accordingly.

Sugar’s tip: SGM - Marzhew & Best Anytime Try Scorers.

North Queensland Cowboys – BYE

After a hard-fought defeat in the Queensland derby against the Brisbane Broncos, the Cowboys get a week off to regroup.
