Round 17 arrives as the season’s true turning point, the moment where pretenders get found out, and contenders start to separate themselves.
The top four is far from locked down, with a clutch of teams separated by only a handful of points and every game carrying genuine weight from here on in.

Parramatta Eels vs South Sydney Rabbitohs Prediction
Thursday, June 25, 7:50pm AEST - Commbank Stadium
History tells the story of the Rabbitohs dominating the matchup against the Eels, particularly when they play at this point of the season.
Latrell Mitchell is expected to return for this matchup, as he makes a case to play in the State of Origin decider for the NSW Blues.
Both teams, funnily enough, are coming into this match; both are 2-3 in their last five, winning in Round 10 and Round 15 before their bye in the previous round.
If Mitch Moses plays for the Eels, it gives them a better chance at competing against the Rabbitohs as their best players return from injury.
Even though the Eels seem to be turning a new leaf in the 2026 campaign, losing two of their last three by six points or less, while upsetting the Canberra Raiders at home, the Rabbitohs should walk away with the victory on the road.
Head-to-head prediction: South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Betting tip: Big win, little win – Rabbitohs 1-12.
Gold Coast Titans vs Canterbury Bulldogs Prediction
Friday, June 26, 6:00pm AEST - Cbus Super Stadium
Two teams fighting for their season’s soul meet at Cbus Super Stadium in a match that neither club can afford to treat as a throwaway.
The Titans have shown some flashes of brilliance this season, with young halfback Zane Harrison kicking the field goal to upset the Panthers at home, but consistency has remained their biggest enemy.
Canterbury have struggled to string performances together, but their golden point victory against the Manly Sea Eagles showed they have plenty of fight as their season hangs by a thread.
They will need Stephen Crichton to lead from the front in a way that simply hasn’t happened often enough this year.
Despite the Titans pulling off upsets in two of the last three weeks, the Bulldogs should be able to have enough edge to claim a valuable two points.
Head-to-head prediction: Canterbury Bulldogs.
Betting tip: Bulldogs win by 13+ points.
Brisbane Broncos vs Sydney Roosters Prediction
Friday, June 26, 8:00pm AEST - Suncorp Stadium
Friday night football doesn’t get much bigger than a Broncos-Roosters clash under Suncorp’s lights, and with both clubs desperate to cement a spot in the finals, this match has genuine season-defining stakes for the home side.
Brisbane have been erratic all year, capable of brilliant performances one week and inexplicable collapses the next, as they will need to bring their most complete effort against a Roosters outfit armed with one of the competition’s most dangerous backlines.
In what looms as a high-quality, free-flowing encounter, the Roosters’ superior class in the big moments makes them our tip.
However, don’t rule out a Brisbane boilover in front of their passionate home faithful.
Head-to-head prediction: Sydney Roosters.
Betting tip: Under total match points.
The Dolphins vs New Zealand Warriors Prediction
Saturday, June 27, 3:00pm AEST - Suncorp Stadium
Serving to be the more fascinating tactical matchup of the round, these two teams, whose seasons have taken them on different trajectories, collide at Suncorp in an encounter that could shift the battle for second place.
New Zealand have shown they’re more than capable of beating the best, even with the loss of Jackson Ford, their best forward this season.
The Dolphins have the defensive grunt and the physical edge to keep this contest close, and have the speed and athleticism out wide to match the Warriors' high-energy brand of football.
This match is expected to be competitive, with the Dolphins’ firepower to be the ultimate deciding factor in a nail-biting finish.
Head-to-head prediction: The Dolphins.
Betting tip: Under total match points.
North Queensland Cowboys vs Penrith Panthers Prediction
Saturday, June 27, 5:30pm AEST - Queensland Country Bank Stadium
The Panthers stroll into Townsville having barely broken a sweat, and when they did against the Titans, they lost by one point without Nathan Cleary, Brian To’o and Isaah Yeo.
North Queensland will desperately want to compete at a high-level against a side that has only lost two matches this season, after losing to the Warriors in an ugly fashion.
The Cowboys at home in Townsville are never a side to be taken lightly, and the crowd roaring behind them gives them every chance of making Penrith work hard for anything they get.
That being said, the Panthers’ relentless defensive structure and Cleary’s ability to produce something special make them the pick to extend their lead at the top of the table.
Head-to-head prediction: Penrith Panthers.
Betting tip: Panthers by 13+ points.
Manly Sea Eagles vs Melbourne Storm Prediction
Saturday, June 27 7:35pm AEST - 4 Pines Park
A clash between two of the competition’s most storied sides that have so much hate for each other takes centre stage at Brookvale on Saturday night, with Manly’s resurgence under Kieran Foran having injected genuine belief into a side that didn’t look like they had life earlier in the year.
The Storm arrived in the best form they have been in this season, which is shocking to say in this manner, but the Storm really struggled to begin the year.
Manly struggled at the end of the game against the Bulldogs, failing to hit the match, and their form has dipped slightly in the middle part of the season.
With Tom Trbojevic playing his second match since his injury, he will need to be playing to perfection if they have any shot against the away side.
Despite the Sea Eagles’ improved form, Melbourne’s experience and tactical nous in big matches should prove the difference, especially after they defeated the Raiders on Sunday afternoon after being down 16-0 to start.
Head-to-head prediction: Melbourne Storm.
Betting tip: Storm by 13+ points.
Canberra Raiders vs St George Illawarra Dragons Prediction
Sunday, June 28 2:00pm AEST - GIO Stadium
The Raiders host a Dragons side still finding its feet under interim coach Dean Young.
Canberra have had its moments of life this season, but after their losses to the Eels and then the Storm after having a massive lead on them, there are loud reasons why they are second last on the table above the one-win Dragoons.
With the Raiders holding a significant home advantage and greater motivation, expect the Raiders to control the game from the forward pack and claim a comfortable win to keep their finals aspirations alive.
Head-to-head prediction: Canberra Raiders.
Betting tip: Kaeo Weekes anytime try scorer.
Newcastle Knights vs Wests Tigers Prediction
Sunday, June 28 4:05pm AEST - McDonald Jones Stadium
The Knights host a Wests Tigers side depleted with injuries left, right and centre.
With Benji Marshall’s men punching well above their weight, given their injury crisis, and refusing to die as a finals chance, despite the chaos that the Knights can provide.
Kalyn Ponga continues to be Newcastle’s most dangerous weapon, and his influence on this contest could be decisive.
Home advantage should tip the scales in Newcastle’s favour, with the Knights expected to do enough to keep their finals charge rolling into the second half of the season.
Head-to-head prediction: Newcastle Knights.
Betting tip: Fletcher Sharpe anytime try scorer.
Cronulla Sharks – BYE
The Sharks lost their winning streak they had been building, and that was even with the return of both Blayke Brailey and Nicho Hynes. This break will allow this side to recover better and be ready for Round 18.
