Sydney Roosters NRL Finals Preview 2025

12/09/2025|Joel Caine|NRL Expert Predictions & Tips

Sydney Roosters 2025 Season Summary

Ladder position: 8th.

Wins: 13.

Losses: 11.

Draws: 0.

Biggest win: 64-12 vs The Dolphins in round 23.

Biggest loss: 50-14 vs Brisbane Broncos in round 1.

Leading try scorer: Mark Nawaqanitawase (23).

When you concede 50 points in your first game of the season you probably aren’t expected to be playing finals footy come September.

Yet here the Roosters are. Despite copping a half century from Brisbane in round 1, farewelling hundreds of games of first grade experience in the off season and being put through the ringer with injuries, the boys from Bondi have made the cut.

Not only that, but they also appear to be all the stronger for it too. After a long and gruelling season, they’ve peaked at the perfect moment and could be ready to cause some chaos from eighth.

Sydney Roosters Players to Watch

Sam Walker

It’s no coincidence that the Roosters revival coincided with Sam Walker returning from a long-term knee injury.

His range of passing and ability to play heads up footy and read the play in front of him will be invaluable if the Roosters are to cause a ruckus and go on a run this finals series.

James Tedesco

The definition of a fine wine. It seems like just the other day James Tedesco was bursting onto the scene with the Wests Tigers, constantly battling unfortunate injuries that seemed hellbent on keeping him from stardom.

In the end, it was Tedesco that won, not the injuries and he went on to establish himself as one of the greatest fullbacks of the modern era.

Now in the twilight of his career, Teddy is still as crucial to his side’s title aspirations as he’s ever been.

Mark Nawaqanitawase

Commentators had to learn to say Mark Nawaqanitawase's name real fast, as he forced them to utter it more than any other try scorer in the NRL this season.

That’s right, the man they call “Marky Mark” finished the regular season as the NRL’s leading try scorer with 23.

It isn’t just the volume of tries he scores, it’s the calibre of them. Apparently, there is no put down he can’t pull off and his four-pointer against the Bulldogs back in round 11 is a lock for try of the season.

Sydney Roosters NRL Finals Preview – Why They Can Win It

What the Chooks lack in consistency and discipline, they make up for in explosiveness. The above trio of Walker, Tedesco and Nawaqanitawase can pile on points at a rate of knots, meaning they can blow anyone off the park on their day.

Just look at what they did to the Storm at AAMI Park a few weeks ago. Trailing 10-0 at halftime, the Tri-colours ran in 40 unanswered points in the second stanza. Their message to the rest of the top eight after that performance was clear – “underestimate us at your own risk.”

Sydney Roosters NRL Finals Preview – Why They Can’t Win It

The flip side of explosive adlib attack is more often than not ill-discipline defence. That has certainly been the tale of the tape for the Tri-colours in 2025 and while they’ve put on some serious scores, they’ve conceded some too.

After all they started the season by letting in a half century to Brisbane and by now you should know what history says about teams who have conceded 50 or more points – they never win the competition in the same season.

Sydney Roosters NRL Finals Prediction

Think you have a good idea of how the Canterbury Bulldogs will fare this finals series?
