South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Newcastle Knights Prediction – Round 9 2025
01/05/2025|Joel Caine|NRL Expert Predictions & Tips
Saturday’s Magic Round action gets underway with the South Sydney Rabbitohs taking on the Newcastle Knights.

It’s a similar story for both sides at the moment, a bright start giving way to a torrid run of results.

Souths won four of their first five in an electric start to Wayne Bennett’s second tenure at the club but have since lost their last three on the spin.

The Knights opened up their 2025 campaign with back-to-back wins, but have not won since, leaving them 15th on the ladder.

It’s not just the wins, but the points that have dried up for the Knights too and they need to find their mojo with ball in hand soon if they want to have any hope of salvaging their season.

They need one of their attacking wizards, like Kalyn Ponga, to pull a rabbit out of the hat pronto.

Well, there will be shorting of rabbits, or magic, at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday, it’s just up to the Knights to bring the hat.

Let’s take a look at how these two teams will line up for Magic Round, as well as some betting tips for the H2H, first try scorer and over/under markets. This is our Rabbitohs vs Knights prediction.

Rabbitohs vs Knights Prediction and Betting Tips

Head-to-Head Prediction

Another week, another loss, another meagre attacking display. Welcome to life in Newcastle at the moment.

The Knights will need to pull a rabbit and a couple of tries too, out of the hat during Magic Round, if they want to leave Brisvegas with the points.

Speaking of Rabbits, they’ll be up against South Sydney who nearly produced a magic trick of their own last week to down the Storm in Melbourne for the first time ever.

Even though they came up short in the end, they should have far too much quality of the rapidly declining Knights, even without their main magician Latrell Mitchell, who is facing a suspension following his sin-binning down in Melbourne.

The kings of identifying and exploiting weakness, South Sydney has won seven of their last eight matches against opponents that were ranked in the bottom four.

Betting tip: South Sydney Rabbitohs.

First Try Scorer Prediction

It’s no surprise we will once again be steering clear of Newcastle players for this market.

Their attacking shortcomings at the moment are obviously well documented, so who presents a credible threat on the South Sydney side of the fence?

Strike centre Jack Wighton has found some form of late, crossing for a double last week against the Storm.

He finds himself in his natural position of five-eighth this week, due to Latrell’s absence, and while some might think this change will hurt his chances of opening the scoring, we beg to differ.

He is guaranteed to be much more involved early on playing pivot, and he should be able to exercise his powerful running game earlier and more often.

Betting tip: Jack Wighton.

Over/Under Prediction

As mentioned in weeks gone by, South Sydney seem to have embraced the grind in 2025. Each of their last eight matches have gone under the total match points line and matching up against the insipid attack of Newcastle we can’t see there being too many points in this one.

Betting tip: Under total match points.
