Melbourne Storm 2025 Season Summary

Ladder position: 2nd.

Wins: 17.

Losses: 7.

Draws: 0.

Biggest win: 64-0 vs Wests Tigers in round 10.

Biggest loss: 40-10 vs Sydney Roosters in round 26.

Leading try scorer: Xavier Coates (19).

It was another successful home and away season for Craig Bellamy and the Melbourne Storm, as they finished second, giving them a great shot at avenging last year’s Grand Final defeat and going one better in 2025.

However, an eleventh-hour form slump and injury crisis is threatening to derail their title tilt. Can they steady the ship after ending the regular season with consecutive defeats, (their first back-to-back losses since early 2023) and win their way through to the big dance?

Melbourne Storm Players to Watch

Harry Grant

The one thing Melbourne’s back-to-back losses to end the season have in common is that neither of them featured Harry Grant.

Undeniably the beating heart of the Melbourne machine, Grant has nearly every footballing weapon in his arsenal.

Creative in attack, disciplined in defence, experienced in the big games and most importantly, clutch in the crunch moments.

Who can forget his golden point trick play to bamboozle the Panthers back in round 24 and win his team the game?

You’re a wizard Harry, and Melbourne will need your magic to go all the way in the finals.

Cameron Munster

When you’re the Queensland and Australian five-eighth, it’s not all that surprising that you’re worthy of watching.

Cameron Munster has been front and centre for the Storm’s sustained success over the past decade and if they finally want to break the Penrith stranglehold on the Provan-Summons trophy, he’ll need to be in the thick of things once again.

Tyran Wishart

With reigning Dally M medallist Jahrome Hughes set to miss the entire 2025 finals series with a fractured forearm the Melbourne faithful will need to Wish(art) on a rising star.

Skilled utility Tyran Wishart is the man tasked to fill Hughes’ shoes and will need to be at his best to make up for what is a sizeable loss for the Storm.

Melbourne Storm Finals Preview – Why They Can Win It

Experience, big players, Craig Bellamy. There’s a reason the Melbourne Storm have made 11 Grand Finals in their 26-year history, winning six of them.

The above holy trinity have been prevalent throughout the last quarter of a century and will no doubt play a major part again if the Storm are to go all the way in 2025.

Don’t forget the double chance they’ve earned by finishing second. History shows that this advantage is paramount when it comes to lifting the Provan-Summons trophy, as no side in the modern era has ever won the title from outside of the top four.

Melbourne Storm NRL Finals Preview – Why They Can’t Win It

Injuries, injuries, injuries. It’s a tale as old as time, but untimely injuries to key players will derail a title charge quicker than a runaway Xavier Coates.

With fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen out of their opening Qualifying Final against the Bulldogs and halfback Jahrome Hughes gone for the season, the Storm have sustained a serious spinal injury.

Opposition sides have already started to smell blood in the water with both the Roosters and the Broncos capitalising on Melbourne’s misfortunes

With a blueprint on how to beat them now available, we expect the other seven teams in the finals to be studying up as we speak.

Melbourne Storm NRL Finals Prediction

There are simply healthier and more in form teams than the Storm at the moment. It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish and if this was earlier in the season, we would jump at the chance to back Melbourne to win the lot. But it isn’t.

Predicted finish: Eliminated in the Preliminary Finals.
