Clive Churchill Medal Winner 2024 Preview & Predictions
01/10/2024|SB Staff|NRL Expert Predictions & Tips

It’s NRL Grand Final week, which means in addition to the big game, there’s all the usual individual side quests too.

One of the biggest individual awards in Rugby League is the Clive Churchill Medal. Named after the legendary Rabbitohs fullback, the Clive Churchill Medal is awarded to the best on ground in the Grand Final.

Trying to pick who will be Man of the Match on Grand Final day is always a highlight for Sportsbet punters, but with so much top talent on the paddock, it’s a task that is easier said than done.

For those playing along at home we’ve created this handy Clive Churchill Medal Winner 2024 preview and prediction guide.

No winger, centre or bench player has ever won the Churchill, only three players have ever won the award twice and no one has ever claimed a hat-trick here. Although there will be a player on the pitch on Sunday gunning for medal number three.

Who is that player? Who are the favourites? And are there any sleeper picks that could upset the apple cart and drop a MOTM performance on Sunday? Let’s find out!

For all the Clive Churchill Medal favourites, smokeys, sleepers and under the radar options, check out our Clive Churchill Medal 2024 preview and predictions below.

Who Won the Clive Churchill Medal Last Year?

Nathan Cleary

Penrith megastar Nathan Clear will get the opportunity on Sunday to become the first man to win the Clive Churchill Medal three times.

He can also become the first player to win the award back-to-back. Cleary was rightfully crowned best on field in last season's decider after turning in arguably the greatest individual performance in NRL history.

With Penrith trailing Brisbane 24-8 with 17 minutes to play, Cleary put an entire club on his back and dragged his side from the brink, before calling time on the Broncos Premiership window, with a 76th minute winner.

It’s no surprise that Cleary is one of the favourites to take out the 2024 version of the award, but who else is fancied to take out the Clive Churchill Medal alongside him?

Clive Churchill Medal 2024 – The Favourites

Jahrome Hughes

The joint-favourite for this season’s Clive Churchill Medal, 2024 has been the year of Jahrome Hughes.

He’s heavily tipped to rock up to Grand Final day with one medal already around his neck, with the Dally M awards taking place on Wednesday night.

If the Storm do go on to win the Premiership, there is no doubt Jahrome Hughes will be a big part of the reason why.

Nathan Cleary

Surprisingly Nathan Cleary is not the outright favourite for this award. Maybe the fact that no one has ever won back-to-back Churchills or won the medal three times has decreased his stocks slightly.

If anyone can do it though it’s Cleary and enough people clearly think he’s capable of making history, as he sits alongside Hughes as the favourite to take out the 2024 Churchill.

Harry Grant

Melbourne’s dynamic dummy half has been one of their standout performers this finals series and could be saving his best for last.

He scored a stunning second half hat-trick in week 1 of the finals, before breaking the ruck up superbly against the Chooks last week to help secure his side’s spot in the big one.

If he can replicate this form on Sunday, he’s every chance of ending up with the 2024 Clive Churchill Medal hanging around his neck.

Dylan Edwards

The 2022 winner of this award Dylan Edwards will aim to join his teammate Nathan Cleary and become only the fourth man in history to win this award twice.

Edwards career continues to go from strength-to-strength and after making his State of Origin debut for NSW this year and helping his state to win the shield, a masterclass on Grand Final day certainly would not be out of character.

Clive Churchill Medal 2024 – Smokeys, Sleepers and Under the Radar Options

Jarome Luai

Despite being in arguably career best form and being the incumbent NSW no.6, Jarome Luai is paying well over double digits to be named the Clive Churchill Medal.

He at times carried the Panthers this year when Cleary was injured and presents excellent value to turn in a MOTM performance come Sunday.

Eliesa Katoa

Few in the NRL can run a line like Eliesa Katoa and should his halves find him a few times back on the angle on Sunday, there’s no reason he can’t be in the conversation for the Churchill.

James Fisher-Harris

The Fish will be playing his final game for his boyhood club on Grand Final day before he relocates back home across the ditch to New Zealand in 2025.

The Kiwi superstar will no doubt be leading from the front as he aims to leave the club that made him on the ultimate high. What’s better than finishing with a Premiership ring? A Premiership ring and a Clive Churchill Medal.

Tyran Wishart

One straight out of left field to finish. Yes, we know, no interchange player has ever won the Churchill, but Tyran Wishart’s impact for the Storm this season has been undeniable.

He deputised brilliantly for Cameron Munster when he was sidelined with injury, and if on Sunday the Storm need a saviour form the pine and Tyran grants their wish, he’ll put his name right in the Clive Churchill hat.
