NRL Judiciary News – Round 27 Recap: 

- Cowboys forward Reuben Cotter and Sharks debutant Michael Gabrael are staring down Week 1 finals suspensions after being charged for high tackles.

- Cotter faces a one-match ban with an early guilty plea for his Grade 2 shot on retiring Raider Josh Papalii.

- Gabrael has been slapped with a heavier Grade 3 charge, meaning a two-match ban with an early plea after wiping out Storm winger Siulagi Tuimalatu-Brown.

- Six other players, including Addin Fonua-Blake and Josh King, have been hit with fines from Saturday's NRL triple header.

Cotter's Costly First-Minute Shot

North Queensland Cowboys veteran Reuben Cotter is set to miss the club's opening final after being charged with a Grade 2 careless high tackle on Josh Papalii, who was running around in his farewell NRL appearance.

The Queensland State of Origin enforcer was sin-binned for the first-minute hit during the Cowboys' alarming loss to the Canberra Raiders in Townsville. 

With a clean record, Cotter is looking at a one-match suspension with an early guilty plea, or the risk of two games on the sidelines if he rolls the dice at the judiciary.

That second game is no small matter either. It could be the Cowboys' second final or the Kangaroos' Rugby League World Cup opener, where Cotter is a likely selection.

Gabrael's Debut Nightmare

Cronulla Sharks outside back Michael Gabrael, drafted in for the injured Mawene Hiroti, endured a debut to forget. 

The winger was sin-binned in the fifth minute for a brutal high tackle on Melbourne Storm flyer Siulagi Tuimalatu-Brown, who was wiped out of the contest.

The MRC hit Gabrael with a Grade 3 charge, and while it's his first offence, an early guilty plea means a two-match ban. 

Fighting the charge risks a third match on the sidelines, potentially ruling him out of the start of the 2027 NRL season given he's unlikely to feature in any World Cup squad.

Six More Charges Round Out the List

The MRC weren't finished there, with six additional players copping fines from the weekend's action:

Ben Trbojevic (Manly) – Grade 1 dangerous contact on Sam Healey: $1000 fine (early plea)

Noah Martin (Canberra) – Grade 1 dangerous contact on Scott Drinkwater: $1000 fine (early plea)

Matty Nicholson (Warriors) – Grade 1 dangerous contact on Reed Mahoney: $1000 fine (early plea)

Ronaldo Mulitalo (Cronulla) – Grade 1 contrary conduct on Harry Grant: $1000 fine (early plea)

Josh King (Melbourne) – Grade 1 crusher tackle on Toby Rudolf: $3000 fine (second offence), risks two matches at judiciary

Addin Fonua-Blake (Warriors) – Grade 1 dangerous contact on Cooper Clarke: $1800 fine (second offence), or $2500 if unsuccessful at judiciary

Deadline Looms for Finals-Bound Duo

All eight players have until midday AEST on Monday to lock in their pleas. Any player rolling the dice will front the judiciary on Tuesday evening at Moore Park, with plenty on the line as NRL finals fever officially kicks off.
