NRL Judiciary News – Round 26 Recap:

- Knights enforcer Jacob Saifiti has been slapped with a four-game ban after his brutal high shot on Warriors winger Luke Laulilii.

- The suspension jumps to five games if Newcastle challenge and lose at the judiciary, effectively ending Saifiti's 2026 campaign.

- Sharks forward Tom Hazelton has copped a one-match ban for a Grade 2 hip-drop tackle in Cronulla's loss to Parramatta.

- Both suspensions land on the eve of the NRL finals, denting the premiership hopes of two contenders.

Saifiti Sent Packing After Brutal High Shot

Saifiti's afternoon unravelled in Newcastle's loss to the Warriors on Sunday when the State of Origin forward rushed out of the line and connected with the head of winger Luke Laulilii. 

Referee Adam Gee wasted no time reaching for the send-off, describing the contact as "direct and very forceful" and citing a "lack of duty of care".

The Match Review Committee graded the incident a Grade 2 reckless high tackle, sending Saifiti to the sideline for four matches with an early guilty plea. Should the Knights roll the dice at the judiciary and lose, that ban blows out to five games.

The maths isn't kind. Newcastle would need to string together five straight wins and reach the grand final for Saifiti to pull on the jersey again in 2026 – a tall order for any side heading into September without one of their most important forwards.

It's also the second time in Saifiti's 11-year career he's been marched. Back in 2023, a high tackle on Jake Simpkin cost him five weeks on the sidelines.

Reaction

Speaking in commentary, former hooker Michael Ennis didn't mince words:

"He's gone. He has to be. He's come out of the line with intent and has absolutely rocked Luke Laulilii. Boy, that's savage. This is a big moment in Newcastle's season. He's so important to their finals series."

Hazelton's Hip-Drop Adds to Sharks' Woes

Down in the Shire, Cronulla's finals build-up has copped its own hit. Tom Hazelton was sin-binned in the 73rd minute of the Sharks' 38-18 loss to Parramatta for a hip-drop tackle, and the Match Review Committee has since graded the offence a Grade 2.

The good news for coach Craig Fitzgibbon? An early guilty plea sees Hazelton available for week one of the finals. 

The bad news? The Sharks also lost Mawene Hiroti to a hip injury and have now dropped matches to bottom-ranked outfits Parramatta, the Dragons and the Raiders across the past month.

Top-Four Dream Slips Away

Cronulla's late-season stumble has cost them a top-four finish and the double chance that comes with it, meaning any premiership charge from the Sharks will now need to be done the hard way.

For Newcastle, the loss of Saifiti's grunt through the middle could prove the difference between a finals cameo and a genuine deep September run. 

Two contenders, two suspensions, and a finals series that just got a whole lot more interesting.
