Every NRL Club’s Current Premiership Drought

07/10/2025|SB Staff|NRL News

All good things come to those who wait. Well, not exactly. Some NRL clubs have been waiting a lot longer than others when it comes to winning the premiership.

From perennial powerhouses to one hit wonders and clubs with supporters who are surely starving for the taste of premiership glory, here we are examining every NRL club and their current premiership drought.

So, which club holds the unwanted record of having the NRL’s longest current premiership drought? Let’s find out.

Brisbane Broncos – 0 Years

After nearly two decades of heartache, the Brisbane Broncos are once again NRL Premiers.

Not once, but twice they were on the receiving end of two of the greatest grand final miracles in history. Firstly, against the Cowboys in 2015 and then the Panthers in 2023.

They effectively had one hand on the trophy both times, until Michael Morgan and then Nathan Cleary had other ideas.

In the 2025 decider it was their turn to pull off a miracle, with Reece Walsh channeling his inner Clearly to almosty singlehandedly drag his side to the winner's podium.

Walsh's heroics, which rightfully saw him win the Clive Churchill Medal, means Brisbane now have the shortest premiership drought in the NRL.

Last premiership: 2025

Grand final appearances during drought: 2015, 2023.

Penrith Panthers – 1 Year

It's over, it's finally over. After four straight premierships it's back to the drawing board for the Penrith Panthers.

Their defeat to the Broncos in the 2025 Preliminary Finals means their counter of years between NRL premierships has offically been reset to one.

Last premiership: 2024.

Grand final appearances during drought: N/A.

The Dolphins – 3 Years*

*The Dolphins have never won an NRL premiership. They joined the competition in 2023.

It seems unfair to include the Dolphins on this list seeing as they have only just become an NRL club in the last three seasons.

There’s no rush for the Phins to lift the trophy as they find their feet in the big time and have already exceeded the expectations of many with their inspired displays, despite being in their infancy as an NRL franchise.

Last premiership: N/A.

Grand final appearances during drought: N/A.

Melbourne Storm – 5 Years

Such has been the success of the Melbourne Storm over the past two decades, five seasons without premiership success seems somewhat strange.

Compared to some other clubs on this list, five seasons is simply a drop in the ocean and they were a whisker away from ending their drought against the Broncos in the 2025 decider.

Last premiership: 2020.

Grand final appearances during drought: 2024, 2025.

Sydney Roosters – 6 Years

One of the most successful clubs of recent times, the 2010s seemed to belong to the Roosters.

From 2010-2019 they made four deciders, winning three of them. They also became the first side since the Broncos in 1997-98 to win back-to-back premierships.

The emergence of the Penrith powerhouse at the foot of the mountains has seen a shift in the hierarchy of NRL clubs, meaning it’s been six years since the Tri-colours last tasted premiership glory.

Last premiership: 2019.

Grand final appearances during drought: N/A.

Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks – 9 Years

Before defeating the Storm in the 2016 decider, it was the Sharks who were the not so proud owners of the longest premiership drought in the NRL.

Since their inception in 1967 up until the 2016 decider, the Sharks went 50 years without winning the premiership.

They are yet to return to the big dance since that fateful night against the Storm, with their supporters hoping it will be a lot sooner than half a century before they get to lift the trophy again.

Last premiership: 2016.

Grand final appearances during drought: N/A.

North Queensland Cowboys – 10 Years

If you’re only going to win one premiership, do it in style. That’s exactly what the North Queensland Cowboys did against the Brisbane Broncos

Widely considered to be the greatest NRL decider of all time, the Cowboys triumphed over their Queensland rivals 17-16 in golden point.

That Michael Morgan run to set up Kyle Feldt’s after-the-siren try in the corner to level the game. JT’s failed conversion to win the premiership that came crashing off the post. Then finally, the ultimate redemption in the form of a golden point field goal. The greatest NRL grand final of all time? You’ll hear no arguments from us.

Since then, they have made one more grand final, going down to the Melbourne Storm in the 2017 final. That means it’s now been a decade and counting since they last won the comp.

Last premiership: 2015.

Grand final appearances during drought: 2017.

South Sydney Rabbitohs – 11 Years

They’ve come within a whisker of snapping this 11-year streak, but the Bunnies have now gone over a decade without adding a trophy to their cabinet.

Their last drought breaking victory was in 2014 and it was a momentous occasion for the Cardinal and Myrtle.

They had endured decades of trials and tribulations which included being kicked out of the competition, to finally return to the top of the NRL mountain.

Last premiership: 2014.

Grand final appearances during drought: 2021.

Manly Warringah Sea Eagles – 14 Years

Now their captain and one of their most decorated players of all time, it was actually in Daly Cherry Evans first season in the NRL Manly last tasted premiership success.

The young halfback burst onto the scene, capturing the title and Rookie of the Year in his first year, but has been unable to guide his beloved Sea Eagles back to the big time ever since.

Last premiership: 2011.

Grand final appearances during drought: 2013.

St George Illawarra Dragons – 15 Years

It took Uncle Wayne throwing them a bone for the Dragons to pick up their first and so far, only NRL premiership as a joint venture.

That was some 15 years ago, and their current inconsistencies means it will likely be a little while longer before they are adding a second Provans-Summons trophy to their case.

Last premiership: 2010.

Grand final appearances during drought: N/A.

Gold Coast Titans – 19 Years*

*The Gold Coast Titans have never won an NRL premiership. They joined the competition in 2007.

One of three sides on this list to have never won a title. That means the Titans current premiership drought has run for as long as they’ve been around, 19 years.

They’ve never even made a grand final either and have done little to repair the reputation of the many failed Gold Coast franchises that have come before them.

Last premiership: N/A.

Grand final appearances during drought: N/A.

Wests Tigers – 20 Years

The Tigers are on an 20-year dry spell that just seems to get worse and worse every season, but they do at least have one premiership to show for their time in the NRL.

Often remembered for now head coach Benji Marshall's ridiculous flick pass to Pat Richards, they triumphed over the Cowboys in the 2005 decider 30-16.

That flick pass was good enough to last a lifetime, let alone two decades. Marshall magic indeed.

Last premiership: 2005.

Grand final appearances during drought: N/A.

Canterbury Bankstown-Bulldogs – 21 Years

For whatever reason Canterbury have not been able to get it together since the early 2000s.

Nearly two decades have elapsed since the fabled “Dogs of War” secured the 2004 premiership.

Yes, they qualified for both the 2012 and 2014 deciders, but they were never really in either of those matches, as both Melbourne and South Sydney saw them off with ease.

Last premiership: 2004.

Grand final appearances during drought: 2012, 2014.

Newcastle Knights – 24 Years

Since the 8th immortal Joey Johns hung them up, the Newcastle Knights haven’t been near an NRL premiership.

Their last premiership came back in 2001, where they defeated Parramatta thanks to a first half masterclass from the aforementioned Johns.

Since then, they haven’t even made a grand final, meaning their current drought clocks in at 24 years and counting.

Last premiership: 2001.

Grand final appearances during drought: N/A.

New Zealand Warriors – 31 Years*

*The New Zealand Warriors have never won an NRL premiership. They joined the competition in 1995.

The other team, along with the Titans and the Dolphins, currently competing in the NRL without a premiership to their name is the New Zealand Warriors.

Joining the comp in 1995, the Wahs have offically eclipsed the three-decade mark without an NRL premiership.

They’ve come close on two occasions, 2002 and 2011, but no cigar.

Last premiership: N/A.

Grand final appearances during drought: 2002, 2011.

Canberra Raiders – 31 Years

If not for a rogue opposition trainer and a dubiously rescinded six again call, the Raiders would most certainly only be on a four-year drought, not a 31 year one.

Alas, Rugby League is a cruel game and depending on who you ask, they did seemly get duded by the refs in the 2019 decider against the Chooks. Tough luck.

Last premiership: 1994.

Grand final appearances during drought: 2019.

Parramatta Eels – 40 Years

Despite making the Grand Final as recently as 2022, the Parramatta Eels currently have the longest premiership drought of any club currently in the NRL.

You have to roll the clock back four decades to 1986 to find the last time the Blue and Gold lifted the Provans-Summons trophy.

It was so long ago, Peter Sterling was not only playing, he had hair, lots of it.

Out of all the teams in the NRL they’ve also made the most grand finals without winning one during their drought.

They came runners-up in 2001, 2009 and 2022 despite the 2009 premiership being stripped of the Melbourne Storm due to salary cap breaches, it was not retrospectively awarded to the luckless Eels.

It could still be a little while longer before they taste premiership glory. After losing the 2022 decider to Penrith, the Eels premiership window appears to be slammed shut as they have sunk back down to the doldrums of the NRL ladder.

Last premiership: 1986.

Grand final appearances during drought: 2001, 2009, 2022.

NRL 2026 Premiership Odds
