That "someone" is Boyd – the player who famously followed Bennett from the Broncos to the Dragons to the Knights and back to Red Hill. 

While the QRL made no direct mention of Bennett in the announcement, the 76-year-old master coach is short odds to feature in the Maroons set-up in some capacity next season.

Boyd's Origin Pedigree

Boyd is no stranger to the Origin arena. Between 2008 and 2017, the fullback pulled on the Maroon jersey 28 times, crossing for 17 tries and forming a key cog in Queensland's historic dynasty that claimed eight straight series wins from 2006 to 2013.

His coaching credentials have been building steadily too, with consecutive victories over New South Wales at Under 19 level signalling he's ready for the step up.

"It's a privileged position and I'm very grateful for the opportunity," Boyd said. "I understand the responsibility that comes with the role as well. My job is to build on the legacy created by the many great Queensland players and coaches who have come before us."

Rebuilding After 2026 Series Loss

Boyd inherits a Queensland outfit still smarting from their 2-1 series defeat to New South Wales in 2026, and he'll be tasked with wrestling back the State of Origin Shield in his debut campaign.

Adding another layer of intrigue to next year's series, both head coaches will be rookies at this level. 

Matt King was appointed to replace Laurie Daley for the Blues last month, meaning the 2027 State of Origin series shapes as a genuine changing of the guard on both sides of the border.
