Fans of democracy and music rejoice. The Triple J Hottest 100 is on the horizon, but this time there’s a twist.

In addition to their annual countdown that takes place in late January, Triple J have announced that this year, Australian music fans will be getting treated to a very special edition of the Hottest 100.

On July 26, to celebrate Triple J’s 50th anniversary, they will be counting down the Hottest 100 Australian Songs of All Time.

As always, these 100 tracks will be voted for by you, so no complaining if your preferred banger from Down Under doesn’t make the cut.

Unlike the usual incarnation of the Hottest 100, it’s a little harder to zero in on who might take out the top spot for this one. We have to comb over multiple decades of top tier Australian music to find a potential victor, not just the last 12 months.

Luckily for all our loyal readers, we love a challenge here at the Huddle and have cracked open the annals of Australian music history in search of some worthy candidates for the No.1 spot in this special countdown.

Will these songs turn out nothing like we had planned? Or will the winning song be so obvious, it will simply fall at our feet? Let’s find out! Our Hottest 100 of Australian Songs Predictions are below.

Triple J Hottest 100 of Australian Songs Predictions – Winning Song

The Favourites

These Days (Powderfinger)

When looking for potential winning songs for this countdown, former Hottest 100 champions seem like a good place to start.

Powderfinger’s melancholy anthem about the passing of time, ‘These Days’, topped the Hottest 100 of 1999 and has since become a staple of Australian music.

Originally written for the independent Aussie film ‘Two Hands’, starring the late Heath Ledger, These Days has transcended its humble origins.

An iconic Aussie song, written by an iconic Aussie band, for an iconic Aussie film, starring an iconic Aussie actor? These Days certainly has a lot going for it.

My Happiness (Powderfinger)

A two-horse race, with themselves? That appears to be a very real possibility for Powderfinger.

After taking out the 1999 Hottest 100, the Brissy boys went back-to-back, topping the countdown at the turn of the century with ‘My Happiness’.

Both My Happiness and These Days both appeared on their ground-breaking album Odyssey Number Five, which topped Triple J’s Hottest 100 Australian Albums of All Time back in 2011.

The Less I Know the Better (Tame Impala)

This bass-driven banger from Fremantle favourites Tame Impala is a bit of a strange one.

On one hand it didn’t top the Hottest 100 in the year it was released (2015), yet five years later it won a special Hottest 100 of the 2010s countdown.

Like a fine wine, it’s clearly gotten better with age and is a genuine contender for top spot here.

Somebody That I Used to Know (Gotye)

If you’re going to be a one-hit wonder, do it like Gotye. You couldn’t go anywhere in 2011 without hearing ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’.

It won Grammys, topped the charts and of course topped the Hottest 100 of that year. Can he run it for this special countdown? We don’t see why not.

Also, the instrumental has also been sampled in viral smash ‘Anxiety’ by rapper Doechii, so it will be at the forefront of the Tik Tok generation’s collective mind whether they know it or not.

Big Jet Plane (Angus and Julia Stone)

The Hottest 100 champs of 2010, soulful siblings Angus and Julia Stone took everyone on a ride in a Big Jet Plane 15 years ago.

They’ll be looking to run it back and fly to the top of the Hottest 100 of Australian Songs in 2025.

Under the Radar Options

Never Be Like You (Flume)

Certified Triple J darling and two-time Hottest 100 winner Flume will no doubt be there or thereabouts in this countdown with one of his many bangers.

Never Be Like You seems to still be on every office playlist nearly 10 years on from its original release and is a solid under the radar option in our opinion.

Dance Monkey (Tones and I)

We’re sure everyone would react to this outcome very civilly. The hipsters were not happy when this came fourth in the 2019 countdown, and we shudder to think of the reaction should Dance Monkey find its way to number one here.

Still, it was a worldwide smash and at the end of the day this is a popularity contest. It couldn’t, could it?

Fall at Your Feet (Crowded House)

Another potential winner that could spark mass outrage. Fall at Your Feet by Crowded House is an undeniable classic, but is it Australian?

Well, just like Pavlova and Russell Crowe, it depends who you ask. There’s a strong argument that Crowed House are in fact a Kiwi band, but a banger is a banger, and Fall at Your Feet is a staple of Australian music history.

Triple J Hottest 100 of Australian Songs Predictions – Winning Artist

The Favourites

Powderfinger

Naturally if you are one of the most iconic Aussie acts of all time and have two songs that are considered shoo-ins for the top 10, you’re going to be heavily favoured to be the winning artist.

Safety in numbers it seems and with both These Days and My Happiness in their arsenal, it’s no surprise to currently see Powderfinger at the top of the outright betting for winning artist, at the time of writing.

RUFUS DU SOL

Australia’s resident kings of deep house and electronica RUFUS DU SOL have been crafting certified bangers for well over a decade now.

This prolific run has yielded tunes such as ‘You Were Right’, ‘Innerbloom’ and ‘Music Is Better’, among others.

It’s songs like these that, at the time of writing, have propelled RUFUS to second in the outright betting for Winning Artist of the Hottest 100 of Australian Songs.

Tame Impala

As one of Australia’s most critically and commercially successful bands of the last decade, it’s no surprise to see Tame Impala right in the mix here.

Their 2015 smash ‘The Less I Know The Better’ was voted the best song of the 2010s, when it topped a special edition of the Hottest 100 back in 2020.

Can Tame Impala top another one-off incarnation of the famous countdown? Watch this space.

The Veronicas

Sometimes, one song is all you need. The Veronicas and their smash hit ‘Untouched’ has been given a new lease of life after being embraced by the Tik Tok generation.

Now you’ll be hard pressed to find a dance floor, wedding reception or afterparty that doesn’t feature the identical twins signature song.

Could the top of the Hottest 100 of Australian Songs be about to join the ever-growing list of places you can hear ‘Untouched’? The odds think there is a fair chance.

Under the Radar Options

Daryl Braithwaite

Will we go riding on the horses straight to number one? Yeah yeah? Maybe. Never underestimate the power of memes, legendary singalong choruses and Daryl Braithwaite’s unofficial Aussie anthem – ‘The Horses’.

Flume

It could be argued that Flume is a little undervalued in this market. There are artists who have never topped a Hottest 100 far shorter than the DJ extraordinaire, despite Flume taking out top spot on two separate occasions.

Any artist who has won Triple J’s Hottest 100 twice, simply has to be considered for the top gong here.

Silverchair

Whether they’ll be walking in a straight line or frog stomping their way towards top spot, Newcastle’s finest Silverchair are surely in with a shot here.

From grunge to rock to pop, Daniel Johns and co. appealed to a wide and eclectic Aussie audience over their nearly two-decade career.

Men At Work

When your most famous song is all about Australia, naturally you’re going to be a contender for a countdown of the hottest Australian songs of all time.

Men At Work’s ‘Down Under’ is the definition of a timeless Aussie anthem packed full of catchy hooks, witty lyrics and vegemite sandwiches. It would be more than fitting if it were to carry Men At Work to top spot of the Hottest 100 of Australian Songs.
