The most prestigious individual honour in the NFL, the Most Valuable Player (MVP) is the award every player covets.

More often than not awarded to a Quarterback, this year looks to be no different with four boom QBs leading the charge as the league’s top performers.

Narrowing down which player will take home the MVP in a competition that has 1,696 players is a daunting task to say the least. That’s why here at Sportsbet we’ve created this in-depth MVP prediction guide to help you get a leg up on the competition.

What Is The Most Valuable Player Award?

Awarded by the Associated Press since 1957, the MVP is voted for by a panel of 50 sportswriters at the conclusion of the regular season and is used to determine who is the current best player in the NFL. The award is then presented at the NFL end of season awards night on February 9th.

Nine players throughout history have won multiple MVPs. Legendary QB Peyton Manning currently has the most having scooped the award a staggering five times.

Jim Brown is the only non-QB to win the award multiple times, with the revered fullback taking home the trophy on three occasions.

Who Won The Most Valuable Player Award Last Season?

Aaron Rodgers

Controversial Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers took home the MVP last time out. For all the drama surrounding the veteran playmaker there is no denying the man can play ball.

That was the fourth MVP award of his illustrious career, meaning only Peyton Manning has more in the history of the NFL. It was also his second straight, although a historical hattrick of MVPs appears to be a step too far for Rodgers.

Most Valuable Player Prediction

Patrick Mahomes

The clear favourite for the award, Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes will be looking to add a second MVP to his collection having already won one in 2018. Mahomes ends the regular season as the league leader in both passing yards and touchdowns (TDs) thrown. Guiding the Chiefs to a 14-3 season and the top of the NFC West, has only solidified Mahomes’ MVP credentials and it will be somewhat of a surprise if his name isn’t read out come February 9th.

Joe Burrow

The first of Mahomes’ challengers for the MVP crown, Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrows has been in fine touch this season. He has led his team to the top of the AFC North and helped them round out the regular season with an eight-game winning streak. His TDs throw to intercepts taken ratio (18-6) shows the 26-year-old rarely misses his mark and if he doesn’t scoop the MVP this season, you can pencil him in for one somewhere down the line.

Josh Allen

One of the preseason favourites for the MVP, Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen is undoubtedly one of the most exciting playmakers on the block. With an absolute rocket of an arm, Allen has thrown some truly remarkable numbers this season, while leading his team into the playoffs. Also an explosive rushing option, Allen was a one-man army at times this season for the Bills and if not for a sudden and unexpected patch of turnovers, he would most likely be the favourite for this award.

Jalen Hurts

The favourite for the MVP at one point this season, until a shoulder injury severely dented his chances, Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts has still had a stellar campaign. One of the best rushing QBs in the game, Hurts also came on leaps and bounds as an elite passer in 2022. The key cog in Philadelphia’s potent offence, the fact that he is still in MVP contention despite getting Hurt(s), really goes to show just how good Jalen was this season.

Under The Radar Option

Justin Jefferson

The only non-QB on this list, Justin Jefferson will be hoping to upset the natural order of things at the NFL end of season awards. Vying for an award traditionally dominated by the playmaking elite, Wide Receiver Jefferson was always going to be an underdog. While it would be somewhat of a minor miracle if he were to claim the award ahead of the likes of Mahomes and Allen this season, he certainly didn’t hurt his chances. A truly destructive runner of the ball he finished the regular season with over 1,800 receiving yards. Although the MVP trophy may be slightly out of reach this time around, if anyone can break the QB stranglehold on the MVP in coming seasons, it’s Jefferson.
