Talk about a hometown gig. The East Bay punk rock trio will perform as part of an opening ceremony celebrating 60 years of Super Bowl history, with the band helping usher generations of championship MVPs onto the field before kickoff. With Super Bowl betting odds heating up as the big game approaches, the NFL is pulling out all the stops for this milestone event.
Local Heroes Get the Big Stage
Green Day formed in the East Bay subregion of the San Francisco Bay Area, making this about as close to a backyard show as you can get for an event of this magnitude.
Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool are expected to perform a selection of their best-known anthems as part of the tribute.
Lead singer Armstrong didn't hide his excitement about the opportunity.
"We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard!" Armstrong said. "We are honored to welcome the MVPs who've shaped the game and open the night for fans all over the world. Let's have fun! Let's get loud!"
Full Pregame Entertainment Lineup
The opening ceremony will air live at 3pm Pacific (February 9, 10:00 AEST) on NBC, Telemundo, Peacock and Universo, setting the stage for the pregame entertainment that follows. For Australian fans wondering where to watch the Super Bowl in Australia, there are plenty of options to catch all the action.
Charlie Puth will perform the national anthem, while Brandi Carlile will sing "America the Beautiful" and Coco Jones will deliver "Lift Every Voice and Sing."
Tim Tubito, the NFL's senior director of event and game presentation, called the combination of Green Day and the MVP tribute a powerful way to mark six decades of the championship game. The ceremony will honour past NFL MVP odds favourites who went on to claim Super Bowl glory.
