There’s no doubt about it, quarterback is the most important position on a football field. The general, the signal caller, the gunslinger, whatever you want to call them, they are the most revered and scrutinized players on the park.

Throughout history there have been a number of men who have excelled in the ultra-demanding role of being an NFL quarterback.

Their achievements on the field are nothing short of legendary and between them they have more rings than an octopus.

These guys are of course the top 10 quarterbacks in NFL history. We’ve taken on the unenviable task of finding out exactly who these 10 signal callers are and ranking them accordingly.

So come along for the ride as we rank the top 10 best NFL quarterbacks to ever throw a pigskin.

10. Aaron Rodgers

Kicking things off is the sometimes controversial, always brilliant, Aaron Rodgers. Even though he now plays for the New York Jets, his exploits at Green Bay made him both a Packers and NFL legend.

It was in Wisconsin he won four NFL MVP awards, the Super Bowl, and the Super Bowl MVP.

His four regular season MVPs make him the player with the second most MVPs in NFL history. Only Peyton Manning has more (we’ll get to him in a minute).

9. Dan Marino

One of the most prolific passers in NFL history, chucks himself into the mix at no.9 on the list of the best NFL quarterbacks of all time.

Yes, the main detractor that always gets levelled at Dan Marino is the fact he never won a Super Bowl. He did make the big dance once, in only his second season as an NFL QB, but his Dolphins went down to Joe Montana’s (more on him soon as well) 49ers.

Marino played his entire 17-year career for Miami, where he would win Rookie of the Year and the MVP as well as breaking numerous NFL passing records, some which he still holds to this day.

8. Patrick Mahomes

A man who is only six seasons into his career in the NFL has cracked the list of the best ever quarterbacks. Yes, Patrick Mahomes is that good.

The Chiefs gunslinger has already won two Super Bowls, two MVPs and two Super Bowl MVPs.

He joins the illustrious company of Tom Brady and Joe Montana as the only quarterbacks to win multiple regular season and Super Bowl MVPs.

When all is said and done, and the curtain comes down on Mahomes’ career he could very well be atop this list.

7. Drew Brees

Recently retired Drew Brees comes in at no.7 on the list of the best NFL quarterbacks of all time.

A pure passer, Brees completely changed the fortunes of the New Orleans Saints when joined them from the Chargers in 2006.

He won the franchise their first ever Super Bowl title, winning the Super Bowl MVP award in the process.

Such was Brees prowess with ball in hand, he currently sits second for career passing yards, career touchdown passes, career pass attempts, career pass completions, and career completion percentage.

Most tellingly, however, Brees currently holds the record of consecutive games with a touchdown pass. He put at least one teammate over for a TD for 54 games straight.

6. Otto Graham

Speaking of throwing, we’re throwing it right back for the next entrant on this list. The late, great Otto Graham dominated football in the 40s and 50s.

He guided the Cleveland Browns to three NFL Championships, holds the NFL record for career average yards gained per pass attempt and has the highest career winning percentage of any NFL starting QB – 81.0%.

Automatic Otto sadly passed away in 2003, but his legacy lives on and he was voted in both the NFL’s 75th and 100th Anniversary All-Time Team.

5. John Elway

Bucking Bronco John Elway didn’t always have the smoothest ride in the NFL, but once he got into his groove, he put that cannon of an arm to good use and never looked back.

He threw 300 touchdowns in his career and over 51,000 yards. He looked set to have a terrible record on the big stage, losing his first three Super Bowls, before winning his final two, ensuring he got the rings his talents deserved.

He also won the Super Bowl as a general manager as well as a player, something that should not be overlooked lightly.

4. Johnny Unitas

Just missing out on a podium finish is old school signal caller Johnny Unitas. The Colts main man was truly ahead of his time and revolutionized the QB position in many ways.

He put up unmatched numbers in his era, including throwing 34 touchdowns in 1959, a figure which would place him among the elite of today’s game.

Trophy-wise, Unitas won four MVP awards and three championships, two of which were back-to-back NFL titles in 1958 and 1959.

3. Peyton Manning

When the last thing you ever do in the NFL is win the Super Bowl and that is just seen as the icing on the cake, you know you are truly one of the best NFL quarterbacks of all time.

Picking up the bronze medal on this list is living legend Peyton Manning. A first round draft pick for the Indianapolis Colts, Manning achieved everything in the game.

His biggest weapon wasn’t his hands, but his brain. Manning’s football IQ helped him win five MVP awards (the most in history) as well as two Super Bowls.

His second Super Bowl win was with the Denver Broncos, as well as being his swansong in the NFL it also made him at the time the first starting QB in the history of the NFL to win the Super Bowl with more than one franchise.

2. Joe Montana

The runner up in this battle of the best is the original Joe Cool – Joe Montana. To say his NFL resume is ironclad would be the understatement of the century.

Montana won four Super Bowls, three Super Bowl MVPs and two regular season MVP awards. He also never lost a Super Bowl, ending up on the winning side four times out of four.

While these achievements alone are enough to distinguish him among his contemporaries, what really set him apart was his ability to remain calm under pressure.

A true comeback king, Montana chucked his team out of fourth quarter deficits time and time again. Joe Cool indeed.

1. Tom Brady

The undisputed GOAT, the unanimous no.1. From a sixth-round draft pick to the best NFL quarterback of all time. Ladies and gentlemen – Tom Brady.

You won’t find a list of the greatest QBs, or NFL players in general for that matter that don’t have Brady in pole position.

This one is no different, there is simply no arguing with accomplishments in the game. He is a seven-time Super Bowl Champion (the most in history) and a five-time Super Bowl MVP.

He has more championship rings than not just any player, but also any franchise and has played in the Super Bowl a mind blowing 10 times.

He won two regular season MVP awards and is one of only two players to do so unanimously. He has the most wins of any QB in NFL history and is first in both career passing yards and touchdowns.

Despite not being superhuman athletically as some quarterbacks are, the thing that sets Brady apart from everyone else is his almost psychotic level of competitiveness.

It was that competitiveness that took him from the 199th overall draft pick, to the greatest quarterback in NFL history. Like who chooses football over a supermodel? Tom Brady, that’s who.
