Most NBA Championships of All Time

12/12/2023|SB Staff|NBA News

If there’s one thing every NBA player wants, it’s for LeBron to retire already, because this is getting ridiculous.

They also want what he already has four of – NBA Championships.

Above even fame, money, and adulation, winning a Championship presents the chance to have your name etched in the annals of NBA history.

Some of the finest players ever to grace a basketball court go their whole career without ever tasting NBA glory. But not these guys.

These guys won, a lot. That means so did the franchises they represented. One ring to rule them all? Not here, the more the merrier.

So, sit back and marvel at the ridiculous achievements of these players and clubs as we take a look at who has the most NBA Championships of all time.

Which NBA Player has the Most Championships?

Bill Russell

More rings than fingers. Legendary Celtics center Bill Russell spearheaded the Boston Celtics record-setting dynasty of the 1950s and 60s.

In that time Russell collected no fewer than 11 Championship rings, making him the most decorated player in NBA history.

While detractors have always questioned the level of competition back then (plumbers have to play somewhere, right?), you can only eat what’s on your plate as they say, and boy did Bill dine out.

This achievement of 11 chips will likely never be repeated, beaten, or matched and Russell has well and truly sealed his place in the annals of NBA history.

Which NBA Team has the Most Championships?

Boston Celtics & Los Angeles Lakers

As it stands, both the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers are currently tied on 17 NBA Championships each.

Together these two franchises have combined for nearly half of all NBA Championships ever won.

The majority of Boston’s success comes from the aforementioned Bill Russell era, where they won a mind blowing eight consecutive titles between 1959-1966.

The Lakers have employed a different kind of consistency when picking up their chips. They are the only team to have won at least one NBA Championship in each of the last four decades.

Both currently deadlocked at 17 titles apiece, it is every NBA fan’s dream for these two to meet in the finals to see which franchise can pull clear atop the mountain.

Top 10 Most Successful NBA Players of All Time

10. Kareen Abdul-Jabbar, Bob Cousy, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippin (6 Championships)

We couldn’t leave any of these legends off this list, so we lumped them together. Spanning different eras, teams, and positions, these are four of the best to ever play the game and it’s no surprise they each have more rings than can fit on one hand.

9 (T-4). Robert Horry (7 Championships)

“Big Shot Bob” was the ultimate championship journeyman. He found a role to play for the Rockets, Lakers and Spurs picking up multiple chips at each.

8 (T-4). Frank Ramsey (7 Championships)

Frank Ramsey banked seven championships for the Boston Celtics between 1957-1964, playing a key role in the most dominant side in NBA history.

7 (T-4). Jim Loscutoff (7 Championships)

Everything we just said for Frank Ramsey applies to Jim Loscutoff. No seriously, look it up.

6 (T-3). John Havlicek (8 Championships)

If you hadn’t figured it out yet, the rest of this list is going to be made up of players who were part of that Boston dynasty and John Havlicek is no exception.

He was no freeloader though; he was a 13-time All-Star and is still to this day the Celtics all time leading points scorer. Yes, he’s ahead of even Bill Russell.

5 (T-3). Stach Sanders (8 Championships)

A consistent playoffs role player, Sanders averaged 8.8 points and 5.8 rebounds when it mattered most for the Celtics during their dynasty.

He received eight chips for his trouble as well as having the honour of having his no.16 jersey retired by Boston.

4 (T-3). K.C Jones (8 Championships)

When the Celtics won eight in a row so did K.C Jones. He was a large part of the reason for this insane level of dominance and like Sanders his jersey too hangs from the rafters of the Garden.

3. Tom Heinsohn (8 Championships)

One of the key pieces of Boston’s dominance, Heinsohn was no role player, but an out and out star.

A purveyor of playoffs excellence, he put up 20 points and 10 rebounds on average during the post-season and found his hands on the NBA trophy no less than eight times.

2. Sam Jones (10 Championships)

Ok, we’re into double digits, this is getting out of hand. Russell’s right hand man throughout the Celtics dynasty, Jones currently sits alone on 10 championships, making him the second-most decorated player of all time, behind only..

1. Bill Russell (11 Championships)

Eleven championships in 13 years, stats that read like a Harry Potter novel because they just don’t seem real (try 49 rebounds in a single game) and he never lost a Game 7, ever.

There’s only one Bill Russell and though he may no longer be with us, he remains the most decorated player in NBA history and his legacy will live on forever.
