What is the NBA In-Season Tournament?

Unlike the Play-ins and the Playoffs, teams do not have to earn their place in the NBA In-Season Tournament, with all 30 franchises automatically qualifying.

Teams are placed into different groups of five within their conference. Each team in a group plays each other once, with each side playing two games at home and two on the road.

After the group stage, eight teams advance to the knockout round. The team who topped each group goes through, along with one team from each conference who had the best record of all the teams in that conference who finished second.

From there it’s do-or-die, with teams playing single elimination matches until only two sides remain.

They will then contest the Championship match, where the winner will receive the inaugural NBA Cup as well as each player on the triumphant team pocketing $500,000 of cold hard cash.

Every game of the In-Season Tournament counts towards the regular season standings, except the Championship game.

Games that are part of the NBA Cup take place on designated “Tournament Nights” so look out for those on your team’s schedule.

In true NBA fashion, the league will also announce an In-Season Tournament MVP as well as an All-Tournament team based on players performance in both the group and knockout stages.
