Milwaukee have agreed to trade Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat in one of the most consequential moves in recent NBA history, with ESPN's Shams Charania reporting the deal late Monday - the eve of the 2026 NBA Draft. Bobby Portis travels south as part of the package.
Boston's aggressive pursuit of the superstar came up short. Milwaukee ultimately favoured Miami's offer over a Celtics bid centred on Jaylen Brown and multiple first-rounders, with the Bucks prioritising younger talent and long-term draft flexibility over a more immediate star return.
What Milwaukee Handed Over for Giannis
Antetokounmpo is a 10-time All-Star who led the Bucks to the 2021 NBA championship and was named to the league's 75th Anniversary Team.
When healthy, he averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists on 62.4 per cent shooting - though injuries restricted him to just 36 games last season.
In return, Milwaukee receive Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakucionis, plus the No. 13 pick in the draft, two unprotected future first-rounders in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 pick swap and a 2033 second-round pick. The Bucks do not hold their own 2027 first-round pick, making those future Miami assets a crucial component of the return.
Herro arrives on an expiring contract, giving Milwaukee room to manoeuvre. The organisation appears to be deliberately stepping back from championship contention - accepting a rebuild in exchange for the flexibility to chart a new course with emerging talent.
What Comes Next for the Heat, Bucks and Celtics
For Miami, this is the franchise-altering acquisition the Heat have been chasing for years. Antetokounmpo joins Bam Adebayo to form one of the most imposing frontcourts in the league, a pairing of elite athleticism, size and two-way capability that will immediately reshape the Eastern Conference landscape.
The Heat finished the 2025-26 regular season 43-39, placing 10th in the East. Adding Antetokounmpo repositions Miami as genuine title contenders, provided the Greek Freak can return to full fitness after his injury-interrupted campaign. Portis adds veteran depth at backup centre behind Adebayo.
The deal is structured to finalise on July 6. Boston, meanwhile, must regroup after coming so close - the Celtics' Jaylen Brown-centred offer was passed over, leaving the franchise to reassess its direction heading into the off-season.
