With the 2024 Bell Beach Pro wrapping up, it’s time for the second and final Australian World Surf League event of the year.

The WSL is packing up and moving from Torquay to the Margaret River region of Prevelly in Western Australia.

This is where the world’s best surfers will take part in this year’s Margaret River Pro. For a portion of the competition this event will be do-or-die in terms of their WSL season.

The Margaret River pro represents the halfway point of the 2024 WSL season and is the last chance for anyone below the cutoff line to make it through to the second half of the 2024 season.

If they fail to do so, they will be relegated to the Qualifying Series where they will have to compete in order to re-qualify for tour next year.

Depending on what conditions await in WA, the Margaret River Pro will either be held at what is known as “the Box” or at the main break. This will have a huge impact on who wins this event as the Box is notoriously a heavy tubing wave, over shallow reef, while the main break is much more walled up and typically favours open face surfers.

Margaret River Pro 2024 Men’s Preview & Predictions

Jack Robinson (Best bet)

Hometown hero Jack Robinson will be surfing in his own backyard. That’s not a figure of speech, his house literally overlooks the Box.

He historically performs well at Margaret River and won this event in 2022. Unfortunately, Robinson injured himself early during last year’s edition, but that should mean he will be extremely eager to make up for lost time.

Keep an eye on Aussie Jack as he looks to make a splash and put on a show for his hometown crowd.

Griffin Colapinto

American Griffin Colapinto is currently the number one ranked surfer on tour and will be one of the favourites at the Margaret River Pro.

He’ll be riding some serious momentum into this one after a win and a second-placed finish in his last two WSL events.

He finished runner up here last year, so he’s got plenty of pedigree on this wave as well as the desire to go one better.

Ethan Ewing

Another Aussie who will be heavily favoured at Margaret River is current world number two, Ethan Ewing.

He had an impressive quarter final finish here last year and his versatile style caters well to either location, whether it be the Box or the main break.

Jacob Wilcox (Value bet)

One last hometown hero to round out our picks. Jacob Wilcox has historically performed here as a wildcard multiple times when he was still a teenager.

Now a bit older, he knows these waves as well as anyone and has the added motivation of needing a big result to jump above the mid-season cutline and stay alive in the 2024 WSL.

Margaret River Pro 2024 Women’s Preview & Predictions

Caroline Marks

Californian sensation Caroline Marks made the semi-finals last year at Margaret River last year and is poised for a big result after some really strong consistency throughout the first half of the season, which sees her sitting fourth in the WSL rankings.

Molly Picklum (Best bet)

Currently the form female surfer of the year, it’s hard to go past homegrown hero Molly Picklum for the Margaret River Pro 2024 title.

She has been excellent so far this season, bar an uncharacteristic performance at Bells Beach last week which saw her exit super early from the event.

Still, she is sitting at number three in the world and has a style that's perfectly suited to either possible location for this event.

Caitlin Simmers

Riding into this event wearing the yellow jersey from Bells thanks to a dominant performance is Caitlin Simmers.

Alongside Molly Picklum and Bettylou Sakura Johnson, she represents the next generation of women’s surfing.

Simmers is great in the tube, so she’ll be one to watch if they run any days at The Box

Tyler Wright (Value bet)

Even though she's sitting at number eight in the rankings after a lacklustre showing at Bell Beach, she's still the no-brainer value pick for us considering her run of historical performances at Margaret River.

She has come second here on four separate occasions and of course won this event in 2016.

Margaret River Pro 2024 Details
