Indy 500 Betting Tips: Will Newgarden Bloom In Hat-Trick Bid?

The Indy 500 is heading back to Indianapolis on Monday, May 26, for another round of high-speed action.

Can Josef Newgarden become the first driver in history to win three consecutive editions of the race? Make your predictions via Sportsbet’s Indy 500 betting odds and markets.

Indy 500 Betting Preview

Josef Newgarden stands on the precipice of history: no driver, in more than a century of trying, has won the Indy 500 three years in a row.

But there’s a catch. The American will start the 2025 edition from the back row of the grid after race officials spotted an illegal attenuator on his car. Will that end Newgarden’s hopes of an incredible hat-trick?

Robert Schwartzman, an Indy 500 debutant, has qualified on the front row. Only one rookie in the past 25 years has gone on to win the race.

Indy 500 is the sixth race of the IndyCar Series campaign, in which Alex Palou has won four of the five renewals contested. Is he the man to beat in Indianapolis?

Indy 500 Betting Odds

Pato O’Ward, who was pipped at the post by Newgarden last year, will set off from the front row as the $6.00 betting favourite.

Punters are rather optimistically backing Newgarden to make history at $10.00; nobody has ever won Indy 500 from the back row.

Scott Dixon, who finished third last year, is available at $9.50, while current IndyCar Series leader Palou is $6.75.

Scott McLaughlin is priced at $9.50, while NASCAR superstar Kyle Larson will be seeking history of his own at $15.00.

Indianapolis 500 Betting Tips

Can Newgarden or Schwartzman achieve something extraordinary this weekend? It’s possible, but for some context Newgarden started on the front row of the grid in 2024 and only just got over the line. From the back row? It’s a tall order.

Since 2015 alone, three drivers with F1 connections – Juan Pablo Montoya, Takuma Sato and Marcus Ericsson – have won Indy 500, so O’Ward, the current reserve driver for McLaren, has the pedigree and the race record (he really ought to have won this last year) to go one better in 2025.

So back the Mexican for a top three finish at $2.70 and/or to win the race at $6.00, as you prefer.

To cover the outlay on O’Ward, there’s an opportunity to back Scott Dixon to finish in the top three at $3.00.

The Kiwi is going nicely during the 2025 IndyCar Series, sitting in fifth place in the standings, but it was his run at the Indy 500 in 2024 that lives long in the memory.

Dixon started from 21st on the grid and ultimately finished third. This year, he sets off from the second row; that surely makes him a dangerous contender.
