Vain Stakes Racing Tips 2023

17/08/2023|SB Staff|Horse Racing Tips

If you’ve been around a while and you think of champion sprinting colts, it’s likely you’ll be thinking of Vain. The champion two- and three-year-old speedster of 1969. It’s apt that the Group 3 Vain Stakes carries his name.

The Vain Stakes is run over 1100m at Caulfield racecourse on August 19. It carries prize money of $200,000 and it is run under the conditions of set weights, plus penalties for feature race wins.

The Vain Stakes has attracted a small, but select field of some of racing’s future sprint stars, and the barrier draw will determine the make-up of the Vain Stakes tips for most racing fans.

The highlight will be the clash between the local colt, the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner, Little Brose (trained by the Hayes brothers three), and the slick Sydney colt Cylinder (trained by James Cummings), who showed his class in the autumn by winning the G2 Todman Stakes at Randwick. They have drawn together in barriers six (Little Brose) and seven, and they dominate the Vain Stakes tips.

Two other talented youngsters also should feature in most people’s racing tips – the Cranbourne-trained colts Scheelite (trained by Ken and Kasey Keys) and the well-named I Am Unstoppable (Lloyd Kennewell and Lucy Yeomans).

Others that will feature as likely contenders in the Vain Stakes Tips include the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr’s Ouroboros, who has a fitness edge and is likely to lead, and the Ciaron Maher/David Eustace-trained Veecee, who is trialled nicely.

The Top Vain Stakes Tips 2023

Cylinder: Judging by his recent trial wins at Hawkesbury and Warwick Farm, this colt has improved since his impressive autumn carnival in Sydney when he found the star colt Shinzo a shade too good for him in the most important two-year-old race of the year, the Golden Slipper. On that run alone he deserves to be the leading Vain Stakes tip.

Little Brose: The handsome dark grey colt is proven around Caulfield, having won the Blue Diamond Stakes last February. Ignore his flop in the Golden Slipper when he had no luck. A good racing tip is to follow horses who handled the tricky Caulfield track, and he ticks the right box with Michael Dee in the saddle.

Scheelite and I Am Unstoppable: It’s hard to split these up-and-coming colts who both possess a scintillating turn of foot. They are likely to be giving starts to the fancied pair, but don’t leave them out of your Vain Stakes Tips, because they have the talent to cause an upset.
