2023 Underwood Stakes Racing Tips

The 2023 Group 1 Underwood Stakes, run over 1800 metres at Caulfield, is perfectly placed to have a huge influence on the remainder of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. That’s not unusual, because a search through the history books of past winners of the Underwood Stakes unearths some of the great names of Australian racing, such as It’s A Dundeel, Weekend Hussler, Northerly, Octagonal, Bonecrusher, Rain Lover, Tobin Bronze, Royal Gem, Ajax and the greatest of them all, Phar Lap.

Sixteen horses have won an Underwood Stakes and a Cox Plate a month later.

Because this year’s Underwood Stakes is run only a week after the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m at Flemington) – usually two-week gap –the spring star Mr Brightside is missing from the field, but not last year’s Underwood winner Alligator Blood, who finished second behind Mr Brightside last week at Flemington.
The Underwood Stakes has attracted a full field of very good Spring Racing Carnival contenders. The contest is so even that there will be varied Underwood Stakes tips from the experts.

The most interesting aspect from a Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup point of view comes from the clash between Without A Fight and Soulcombe, who are sure to be prominent in the Underwood Stakes tips. They are in ours.

Perhaps the best racing tip for the day comes from trainer Chris Waller who has called in Hugh Bowman from Hong Kong to ride Lindermann. Bowman rode Lindermann when he led throughout to win the G1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) in the autumn.

Attrition, who has the Mr Brightside form line, Right You Are and Bank Maur are promising gallopers capable of running well in the Underwood Stakes. Nonconformist, Smokin’ Romans and Mo’Unga are horses proven at this level in their best form.

The Leading Underwood Stakes Tips

Without A Fight: He came to Australia for the Melbourne Cup as a top fancy, but things didn’t go to plan. Now settled here under the care of Anthony and Sam Freedman, who have concentrated on putting speed into his legs, he’s developed into a genuine weight-for-age horse. It’s hard not to make him our top Underwood Stakes tip.

Soulcombe: Burst on the scene for trainer Chris Waller last spring when he won the Queen’s Cup at Flemington in brilliant style. He looks like he has returned at the top of his form after winning the Heatherlie Handicap (1700m), at Caulfield on September 2, with a big finish. The 1800m is ideal and, although he’s yet to prove himself at weight-for-age, he’s a special talent.

Lindermann: Take the Underwood Stakes tip from trainer Chris Waller who has flown in Hugh Bowman to ride his classy four-year-old. Bowman rode Lindermann to win the Rosehill Guineas in the autumn and he should be able to park him on the pace from barrier 3 at the horse’s first look at Caulfield.
