The Group 1 Thousand Guineas, run over 1600m at Caulfield, is back to its original position in the Caulfield Cup after being run in November in the past two years. The result is a quality field of 3YO fillies that includes the G1 Flight Stakes winner Apocalyptic.

Last year’s Thousand Guineas was won by Another Prophet, trained by Ciaron Maher and ridden by Ethan Brown. However, in 2023, Joliestar won the Guineas for Chris Waller, and she has become a star sprinter who, on this day, will be one of the favourites for The Everest at Randwick.

Thousand Guineas 2025 Preview and Details

Track: Caulfield.

Distance/type: 1600m. 3YO Fillies. Set Weights.

Date: Saturday, 18 October.

Total prizemoney: $1,500,000

First prize: $900,000

Thousand Guineas – Race and Time: Race 7 (3.45 pm)

Weather and Track

The Caulfield track was rated a Good 4 on Wednesday. The BOM is predicting only occasional showers for the rest of the week. Bet on a Good surface.

The rail is out 3m. With the prospect of a firm track, expect the bias towards fast horses on the inside to have an advantage. Monitor the racing patterns earlier in the day.

The Trainers

Michael Freedman, who trains the favourite Apocalopytic, is chasing his first Thousand Guineas win, but Freedman was part of the Freedman brothers team, under elder brother Lee Freedman, that won four Thousand Guineas. Freedman also saddles Just A Journey.

Chris Waller has three past winners, including two in the past three years. His improving filly, Karinska, ran well for third behind Apocalyptic in the Flight Stakes. Last year’s winning trainer, Ciaron Maher, will saddle the grey filly Salty Pearl.

Other trainers who have won a Thousand Guineas, and who have a starter this year include the Hayes brothers (Ben, Will and JD) who will be aiming to win their first with Ethereum Girl. The Hayes boys’ father, David, has won three Thousand Guineas.

Surprisingly, leading trainers Peter Moody (Ole Dancer), Tony McEvoy (Steel Trap) and Danny O’Brien (Getta Good Feeling) have yet to win a Thousand Guineas.

The Jockeys

With most of the senior jockeys riding in Sydney at The Everest meeting, not one of the jockeys available to ride in the Thousand Guineas has previously won the Classic. James McDonald and Kerrin McEvoy, both riding in Sydney, are the current jockeys with the most Thousand Guineas wins – two each.

Jordan Childs, who rides Just A Journey, will be trying to emulate his famous father Greg, who won the 1991 Thousand Guineas on Richfield Lady for the late Bart Cummings.

The Speed Map

Tempo prediction: moderate

Apocalyptic has dominated her past two starts in Sydney, showing a dazzling turn of foot off slow/moderate tempos. She will probably get the same here from a good draw. The likely go-forward horses are Cherish Me, Chateau Eze and Steel Trap.

Expect Ole Dancer, from barrier 5, to race a bit more forwards than usual from barrier 5. Ferivia and Salty Pearl are drawn well enough to be in the first half of the field

The get-back horses are Karinska, Ethereum Girl, Mating Call and Getta Good Feeling.

Point of Interest

Significant gear changes: The grey filly, Salty Pearl, gets blinkers for the first time. It should see her settle closer from her good barrier draw.

Thousand Guineas 2025 Racing Tips

Thousand Guineas Top Tip

Apocalyptic

She has been the standout filly in Sydney. She sat outside the leader to win the G1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick after winning the Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) and Furious Stakes (1200m). She looks foolproof enough to handle Caulfield. At her best, she should win, especially after drawing barrier 4.

Thousand Guineas Dangers

Ole Dancer

Trainers Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman are having a good run. Ole Dancer is a filly with enormous talent. Stiff not to win the Guineas Prelude at Sandown. The 1600m will suit and jockey Blake Shinn is in great form. Nicely drawn. If anything can topple the favourite, it will be her.

Ferivia

She won the G3 Quezette Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield and then had no luck at Moonee Valley. Raced handily before beating Ole Dancer in the G3 Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Sandown. Expect her to be in the finish from barrier 3.

Karinska

Chris Waller’s sole representative in the race he has won twice in the past three years. This filly is starting to hit her straps. Well beaten when third behind Apocalyptic in the G1 Flight Stakes, but she’s on the up. Nash Rawiller rides.

Thousand Guineas Roughies

Getta Good Feeling

Impressive winning the G2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington. She’s on the VRC Oaks path, and this is tougher. Capable of running over the top of them if the pace is on.

Salty Pearl

Game placing in the Edward Manifold behind Getta Good Feeling. Honest filly in the capable hands of Ciaron Maher. Expect her to run a cheeky race.

Ethereum Girl

She won the SAJC Sires’ Produce (1400m) at Mophettville in July. Beaten into fourth in a four-way photo finish behind Ferivia and Ole Dancer in the Guineas Prelude. She can cause an upset.

Thousand Guineas Same Race Multi (pick a combination)

Apocalyptic – top two

Ole Dancer – top three

Ferivia – top four

Getta Good Feeling, Karinska, Salty Pearl – top five

Ethereum Girl – top six
