Silver Shadow Stakes Racing Tips 2023

17/08/2023|SB Staff|Horse Racing Tips

The $300,000 Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes, run over 1200m, is the first leg of the four-part Princess Series, for three-year-old fillies, raced through the spring. The other races in the series are: Group 2 Furious Stakes (1200m); Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m); and culminating with the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on September 30.

The concept was first devised in 1985, and it takes a very special filly to win all four races with only two achieving the feat – Samantha Miss (2008) and Angst (1993). Past outstanding Silver Shadow Stakes winners also include Libertini, Nechita, Gold Edition, Mnemosyne, Victory Vein, Ha Ha and Skating.

Last year, the Chris Waller-trained filly Zougotcha won three of the legs, missing out on the Furious Stakes, simply because Waller decided not to run her in it.

It’s interesting that the filly that is widely regarded as the best prospect of taking out the Princess Series is the James Cummings-trained Commemorative, but she is not running in the Silver Shadow Stakes.

The training partnership of Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott won their first Silver Shadow Stakes in 2021 with Swift Witness, and the strong racing tip is for their exciting filly Taormina to make it two. They also have a strong hand in the Silver Shadow Stakes tips with Autumn Ballet and Platinum Jubilee.

Expect trainer Annabel Neasham’s Kristilli to be in the Silver Shadow Stakes tips, especially after top jockey James McDonald will ride her, and James Cummings has the unbeaten Zardozi (Chad Schofield) and the consistent Inhibitions to represent the powerful Godolphin stable.

The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace stable’s Silver Shadow Stakes tip is Estriella, who has an extra level of fitness on her rivals after competing through July.

The Top Silver Shadow Stakes Tips

Taormina: The filly warmed up for this race with a soft trial win at Warwick Farm on August 4, which followed wins at Warwick Farm and Randwick in July. She has fitness on her rivals and is likely to set the pace with Regan Bayliss in the saddle. She’s the leading Silver Shadow Stakes tip.

Platinum Jubilee: Stablemate of Taormina and she was the best filly in the Waterhouse-Bott stable during the autumn racing, and won the Gimcrack Stakes last spring. She’s had two solid trials to ready her for this. Importantly, Tim Clark, who has been riding Taormina, has elected this filly, who will come from barrier six.

Estriella: It took a good colt in Callabus to beat her at Randwick on July 29, after winning her maiden impressively at Gosford before that. She’s fit and races near the pace and should be in your Silver Shadow Stakes tips. Importantly, Jamie Kah will ride her from barrier five.
