The Group 3 San Domenico Stakes, first run in 1980, is an important early spring carnival sprint race for three-year-olds, run over 1100m at Rosehill. The San Domenico Stakes 2023 carries a purse of $250,000 and is run under the handicap conditions of set weights and penalties.

The race is named after San Domenico, the dynamic sprinter of the late 1940s and early 1950s, who won such races as the Oakleigh Plate, George Main Stakes, Futurity Stakes and All Aged Stakes.

There’s quite an impressive honor roll of past winners of the San Domenico, headed by recent winners Exceedance, Star Turn, Snitzerland, Foxwedge, Gold Edition, Testa Rossa, General Nedyim, Our Maizcay, Tierce and Sir Dapper. It’s possible there is a horse of similar ilk to tip in this year’s San Domenico Stakes..

This field is set to launch the spring carnival campaigns of some of the most promising young speedsters in Australia. Who knows where it might end for the winner – maybe even a slot position in the $20m The Everest at Randwick on October 14?

Intriguingly, last year’s winner Sweet Ride won’t be in the San Domenico Stakes after trainer Annabel Neasham sent him to Melbourne to run in Saturday’s Listed Carlyon Stakes (1100m) at Moonee Valley, rather than try for a repeat.

There has been a splash of money for Kandinsky Abstract, an imposing colt named after Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky, known for his use of colour and shapes. There’s a strong San Domenico Stakes tip that the shape Kandinsky Abstract’s rivals will see at the end of the race will be the colt’s ample rear end.

Kandinsky Abstract, who won his only start at Canterbury in May has been trialling brilliantly for his trainer Chris Waller, and top jockey James McDonald has snapped up the ride. The wide draw, barrier 11, means it’s easy to paint the picture of how McDonald will ride the colt – patiently. Kandinsky Abstract has some talented rivals to measure against, including the unbeaten Libertad and a Rolls Royce of a colt named Corniche, who has drawn nicely in barrier six.

Most smart judges will have Introducing and The Instructor – second and third respectively in the Rosebud over this same course on August 12 – in their San Domenico Stakes Tips, and Cigar Flick can make up for a luckless last start effort.

Others likely to be amongst the prominent racing tips in the San Domenico Stakes 2023 include General Salute, Corniche’s stablemate Barber, Butch Cassidy, and the recent smart provincial winners Fire Star and Moravia.

Expect the slick tempo of this dash for cash to come from the usual suspects, the Gai Waterhouse/Adrian Bott-trained pair The Instructor and Introducing, and Fire Star, who is in the Peter and Paul Snowden stable.

The Leading San Domenico Stakes 2023 Tips

Kandinsky Abstract: Some say the cost of buying a horse is the cheapest part of the ownership experience, but not in the case of Kandinsky Abstract – he cost a whopping $3 million as a yearling at the 2022 Sydney Easter Yearling Sales. Although this brother to former star filly Sunlight showed raw talent to win on debut at Canterbury in May, his recent impressive trials suggest he has returned to racing as a more rounded, mature product, ready for a big spring racing carnival, which sees him as the main San Domenico Stakes Tip.

Corniche: One of the headline three-year-olds of the powerful James Cummings stable. Last season he was precocious winning the G2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) at Randwick, which booked him a place in the Golden Slipper field, but Cummings decided to spell the colt after he had been in training since the 2022 spring. Corniche has returned as a powerful three-year-old and from barrier six, he should get the run of the race in the San Domenico Stakes.

Introducing and The Instructor: The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott team have a strong hand in the San Domenico Stakes in this pair of quality colts. Introducing led and was run down late by Tiz Invincible in the Rosebud over this course two weeks ago. The Instructor trailed him before finishing third. The strong racing tip is that they will dominate this race from the front.

Cigar Flick: He was the unlucky runner in the Rosebud at Rosehill on August 12 when fourth. Jason Collett retains the ride and expect Cigar Flick to be smoking as a value chance.
