Queen Elizabeth Stakes 2024 Tips

Queen Elizabeth Stakes 2024 Racing Tips

The Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival’s headline fortnight of racing that is The Championships concludes with a bumper meeting at Randwick racecourse on Saturday, April 13.

The headline race and, perhaps, the race of The Championships is the $5 million G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes, run over a testing 2000m on what is expected to be close to a good surface after last week’s deluge that threatened the opening meeting. The Queen Elizabeth Stakes is race eight at 3.55 pm (AEST).

The Queen Elizabeth Stakes was first run in 1954. Some of the wonderful past winners include the incomparable Winx, Might And Power, It’s A Dundeel, Lonhro, Doriemus, Rough Habit and Tulloch.

The 2024 Queen Elizabeth Stakes will add another champion to the race’s rich history.

The coming together of horses with differing Melbourne and Sydney form lines is one of the key points when working through the Queen Elizabeth Stakes tips.

The Victoria Racing Club’s decision to set back the running of the $3 million Australian Cup (2000mn) at Flemington until the end of March meant that the Australian Cup, normally run early in March, attracted a high-class field and made it the ideal lead-in race to the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, run two weeks later.

Not only did it result in the star Melbourne middle-distance gallopers, such as Mr Brightside and Pride Of Jenni, staying in Melbourne but it also saw Sydney-trained horses Cascadian and Atishu come south in search of the rich prize money.

The Australian Cup Form Line

The Australian Cup was a thrilling affair with Pride Of Jenni, as is her style, setting a torrid tempo that took Mr Brightside out of his comfort zone, but set it up for the late-closing Cascadian to win his second consecutive Australian Cup, as a nine-year-old. Pride Of Jenni was a close second, Atishu ran well for third, but Mr Brightside struggled home fifth and was lame after the race.

Cascadian, Pride Of Jenni, Atishu and Mr Brightfire will clash again at Randwick and they will be prominent in the racing tips of most experts.

The Sydney Form and the Overseas Mares

In Sydney, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes form line comes through the G1 Ranvet Stakes, also weight-for-age over 2000m, run at Rosehill on March 23, which saw two high-class mares from Europe, Via Sistina and Place du Carrousel, dominate the race.

Via Sistina, now trained by Chris Waller, produced a monumental performance to come from last in the small field to win so impressively that she raced to the top of the Queen Elizabeth Stakes betting markets. Jockey James McDonald wiped his brow in amazement after the race, and declared, “She will be even better in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.” That’s a Queen Elizabeth Stakes tip from the jockey’s mouth!

The same can be said for Place du Carrousel, who also was having her first Australian start for new trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman. Place du Carrousel did most of her racing in France where she won the G1 Prix de l’Opera (2000m) at Longchamp on October 22. She also earned a start in last year’s G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe – one of the world’s great races – after winning the G2 Prix Foy (2400m) at Longchamp.

Via Sistina is a big-striding mare with an exceptional turn of foot. Last year, she won the G1 Pretty Polly Stakes (2011m) at the Curragh in Ireland, but her second behind King Steel in the G1 Champion Stakes (2000m) at Ascot (UK) in October that stamped her class. Chris Waller, who has five of the 11 starters, is chasing his sixth Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

The Tempo Will be Hot

The Queen Elizabeth Stakes will be a completely different style of race than the Ranvet Stakes, which was run at a dawdling tempo before the field sprinted the final 500m. The free-running Pride Of Jenni will make sure that this race will be a last-horse-standing affair.

She was too keen in her first try in the 2000m at Flemington, but trainer Ciaron Maher has said he expects her to learn from the experience and be easier for jockey Declan Bates to control her tempo, leaving a bit more for the battle to the line.

No matter how you sum up this race, it will be an enthralling contest for anyone working through their Queen Elizabeth Stakes tips.

Not Looking Good on the Brightside

Mr Brightside is one horse that hasn’t fared well from the barrier draw. From the outside, barrier 11, jockey Craig Williams will have to take his medicine and go back, meaning he will be giving most of his rivals, especially Pride Of Jenni, a big start.

An interesting late inclusion to the Queen Elizabeth Stakes field is the three-year-old Ceolwulf, who ran very well for second behind Riff Rocket in last week’s Australian Derby. He’s a promising colt and he’ll get a nice run after drawing barrier one, but the history books are against him being in the racing tips – no three-year-old has won the Queen Elizabeth Stakes since Intergaze in 1997.

The Leading 2024 Queen Elizabeth Stakes Tips

Pride Of Jenni

Sensational front-running mare who twice won at Group 1 level within a week at Flemington in the spring, and she showed she’s even better by winning the All-Star Mile at Caulfield in March. Cascadian ran her down late in the Australian Cup at her first try at 2000m at Flemington on March 30. She will be better for that experience, and it will take a champion to run her down. She’s the top Queen Elizabeth Stakes tip.

Via Sistina

This former Irish mare couldn’t have been more impressive winning the G12 Ranvet Stakes (2000mn) at Rosehill three weeks ago at her Australian debut. Trainer Chris Waller and jockey James McDonald believe she will be even better for the run and around Randwick. She’s at the top of most racing tips, but will she handle a hectic pace?

Place du Carrousel

French mare with proven form, especially up to 2400m, which will help her in a race that will be run at break-neck speed. Very good second behind Via Sistina in the Ranvet Stakes. The sting out of the track surface will help her chances.

Cascadian

Marvellous old campaigner who relished the hot pace to run down Pride Of Jenni to win his second Australian Cup. Ben Melham retains the ride and the big chestnut is drawn to tuck away and hit the line late.

Queen Elizabeth Stakes 2024 Odds
