Qatar Racing British Champions Day takes place at Ascot on Saturday, October 17, with seven races, of which five are Group 1 contests.

Britain’s richest race day brings together leading sprinters, milers, middle-distance horses and stayers for the flat season’s championship showcase. The first race is scheduled for 21:55 AEST.

The standout prospective clash is Calandagan against Ombudsman in the Champion Stakes, while Kalpana bids for a third consecutive Fillies & Mares victory.

Betting Markets to Watch

The Champion Stakes is very much between last year’s winner Calandagan and runner-up Ombudsman , with both at the same odds in the early betting.

It could be Ombudsman’s last race, but it will depend on the ground. He comes off the back of an emphatic Prince of Wales’s Stakes victory at Royal Ascot, but not many ever bet against Calandagan.

Bay City Roller may have value, as he arrives with an Arc runner-up finish behind him and would benefit from give in the ground.

In the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, Talk of New York heads the market, with Rayif just behind. Charlie Appleby’s Godolphin runner won the Group 2 Joel Stakes at Newmarket convincingly, but Talk of New York has had to be supplemented for this race.

If he isn’t supplemented, Prix Jacques le Marois winner Rayif is a leader, while Constitution River and Ten Bob Tony each have value in this race as proven straight-mile runners.

Kalpana is the huge favourite in the Fillies & Mares stakes , as she aims to secure a hat-trick of victories. She added the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes this summer, and victory is likely for her in this one.

Although she’s had a less-than-consistent 2026 campaign, Minnie Hauk could challenge Kalpana if she enters the race. Aidan O’Brien’s filly has suffered problems with corns throughout the year, but she is a proven and credible challenger.

Remember, she won the Oaks, Irish Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks in 2025 before finishing second in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
