2023 Moir Stakes Tips

Although modern punters can study as much data and sectional times as they like, sometimes it’s as simple as; the eye doesn’t lie. Watching Imperatriz’s sensational last-to-first win in the G2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley, on September 9, is an exhilarating experience, no matter how many times the replay is on repeat.

You could almost feel, even hear, the “whoosh” as she whizzed by the hot favourite Giga Kick on the home turn – albeit Giga Kick suffered from a poorly judged ride and an injury that has seen him off to the paddock.

While Giga Kick rehabs, Imperatriz returns to light up Moonee Valley on Friday night in the $1 million G1 Moir Stakes, also over 1000m. With Giga Kick sidelined and the best of the Sydney sprinters at home preparing for the The Everest, Imperatriz dominates the betting markets and the Moir Stakes tips.

Every race is different, so it’s doubtful the mare – the winner of 14 of her 20 starts – can be expected to repeat the heroics of the McEwen, but jockey Opie Bosson (replacing Mick Dee) makes no secret of the fact he hasn’t ridden a horse with Imperatriz’s turn of foot.

The Moir Stakes was first run in 1976 – won by Scamanda – when it was part of Cox Plate day. In recent years, the Moir Stakes has swapped positions with Moonee Valley’s other feature Spring Racing Carnival sprint, the Manikato Stakes. Some of the famous Moir Stakes winners include such champions as Black Caviar, Apache Cat, Buffering, Miss Andretti, Falvelon, Placid Ark, Special, and the great Manikato.

There is one certain racing tip – the 2023 Moir Stakes will be a hectic affair with some serious speed up front from the Queenslander Zoustyle, WA’s Acromantula and the local Generation. Expect Imperatriz, Uncommon James and Asfoora to sit back off the speed and come on late. May the fastest horse win.

The Leading Moir Stakes Tips

Imperatriz: Drawing barrier 5 in a nine-horse field is ideal for this star mare, who likes to sit back off the speed and come with a rush. She is unbeaten in two starts at Moonee Valley, and she gets her regular rider, Opie Bosson, back on. She’s the one the fans want to see win and she’s top of the Moir Stakes tips.

Uncommon James: If there is a horse who can upset the favourite it will be this quality Queenslander, who is next in line in the Moir Stakes tips. He has the record of six wins and three seconds from 10 starts, including winning the G1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield in February, when he beat Lofty Strike and Asfoora. First time at Moonee Valley, but he has worked very well around the tricky course.

Rothfire: He chased home Imperatriz in the McEwen Stakes, and he will be fitter for the run. He won last year’s McEwen before finishing fifth in this race, and then ran second in the G1 Manikato Stakes. Barrier 1 means he will stalk a hot pace, and he should be in your Moir Stakes tips.

Asfoora: Speedy mare who returned with a good win in the Listed The Heath (1100m) at Caulfield on September 2. She’s very honest and deserves a play at some value odds in the Moir Stakes market.
