Memsie Stakes 2023 Racing Tips

31/08/2023|SB Staff|Horse Racing Tips

The 2023 Memsie Stakes has had a “pay cut” from a prize money bank of $1 million in 2022 to $750,000, but it hasn’t affected the talent that will contest the 1400-metre, weight-for-age event, run at Caulfield on Saturday.

The 2023 Memsie Stakes is shaping as a clash for the ages with some of the big-name spring players coming together to kick off their campaigns. Not all will go in the same directions, in fact, some are taking an opposite path. For example, I Wish I Win will stay on a sprinting path heading to the $20m The Everest (1200m) at Randwick in Sydney, whereas his main Memsie rivals, Alligator Blood and Mr Brightside, are Cox Plate (2040m) bound.

Apart from that star-studded trio, rising star 4YOs, Osipenko, Bank Maur and Amenable create a lot of interest, as does the mighty midget from Tassie, The Inevitable, and the quality mares Annavisto, Princess Grace and Steinem. All should be in the wider Memsie Stakes tips.

Memsie Stakes past winners

The Memsie Stakes has a deep history of providing Australia’s past greats a springboard to Australia’s iconic races. Melbourne Cup winners to also win the Memsie Stakes include Makybe Diva and Comic Court; Memsie Stakes winners to go on to win a Caulfield Cup are headed by Silver Bounty and Eurythmic; and Cox Plate champions include So You Think, Makybe Diva, Sunline, Rubiton, Ajax, Heroic and, of course, the greatest of them all, Phar Lap.

Any of the top Memsie Stakes picks are expected to have an impact later this spring.

The leading Memsie Stakes tips 2023

Mr Brightside: He has the advantage over his main rivals as having had a solid lead-up race to the Memsie Stakes. He became a series Spring Carnival racing pick when he demolished his rivals in very fast time winning the G2 PB Lawrence Stakes, over the same course and distance, two weeks ago. Last spring, Mr Brightside won the Lawrence and then won the G2 Feehan Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley by 4.5 lengths. From barrier 15 he can stalk a solid pace by following Alligator Blood (barrier 14) across, and he looks the best Memsie Stakes tip.

I Wish I Win: Trainers Peter Moody and his new partner Katherine Coleman chose the Memsie Stakes as an ideal starting point to a spring program that will see him come back in distance from 1400m to the 1200m of The Everest. Moody’s racing tip to the media was the slower tempo of the Memsie will suit I Wish I Win rather than chasing a hot speed in a sprint race, when he’s still “ring rusty” resuming from a spell. Many experts regard I Wish I Win as the best horse in Australia, so cop the Memsie Stakes tip that he could blow his rivals away with his dynamic finish.

Alligator Blood: Tough, durable and honest describe this remarkable horse who has won 13 races and more than $6 million in prize money. He’s had some solid trials and race-day gallops to get him ready for this assignment, and his trainers, Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott are, as usual, buoyant about his chances. He will lead and only a very good horse will run this hard-nut galloper down with clever jockey Tim Clark setting the tempo.
