Betting Preview

The Grand National is the world's most famous steeplechase, run over a gruelling 4 miles 2½ furlongs (about 4.25 miles) at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool.

It features up to 34 runners tackling two full laps of a unique, triangular course with 30 massive spruce-topped fences that test jumping ability, stamina, and nerve.

The total prize pot is worth £1 million (AU$1,921,005), with £500,000 to the winner (AU$960,502).

The runner-up will also receive a large sum of money, with £200,000 (AU$384,201) on offer. This makes it one of the highest prize money horse races in the world.

From a betting perspective, it's worth noting that this is a handicap race, with weights (up to 12 stone) assigned based on official ratings to level the field; only seasoned chasers aged 7+ qualify.

Ahead of the race, I Am Maximus has been assigned top weight, suggesting he is the best horse in the race, with the organisers using the handicap system to try to balance the field.

Betting Markets to Watch

As highlighted, I Am Maximus is considered the best horse in the field based on recent and historical form, which is why he is the early favourite.

Indeed, it's hard not to think about him as a legitimate contender, as he won the Grand National in 2024 and finished second in 2025 to Nick Rockett by 2.5 lengths.

Paul Townend was the jockey, and barring any late decisions, he looks likely to mount him again, adding to the perception that he is the favourite.

The each-way market always offers value in this type of race due to its jumps and length. Iroko has value worth exploring.

He finished fourth last year when he was considered the favourite to win that race, and has had two positive results this season. His last run (Cheltenham) wasn't great, but there's enough there to consider him as an each-way option with five places paid.

Our Prediction

Check the latest Grand National betting odds at Sportsbet.

I Am Maximus looks to be the most likely to win the 2026 Grand National, in our opinion. We believe he is the strongest horse in the field and has the experience of winning a second race in three years.

Iroko is our value pick in the each-way, while we think Nick Rockett offers long shot value. He has raced just once since his win and finished 3rd (of 4). He might be fresh, but perhaps too fresh for this one.

Still, a top-five finish offers value. For more insights, check out our horse racing tips.
