Golden Slipper 2023 Tips

16/03/2023|SB Staff|Horse Racing Tips

As soon as Autumn rolls around, Australian horse racing enthusiasts usually begin turning their attention towards one race. That race is of course the Golden Slipper.

One of the most prestigious and popular races in Australia, the Golden Slipper is always an annual highlight for Sportsbet punters and this year’s edition should be no different.

What is the Golden Slipper?

The Golden Slipper or as it’s officially known: “the Golden Slipper Stakes”, is one of the most iconic horse races in Australia.

Held annually at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, the Golden Slipper is a Group 1 race that is only open to two-year-old Thoroughbreds.

These horses then compete over a distance of 1,200m on a turf track at set weight conditions. As of 2023, the Golden Slipper Stakes prize pool is approximately $5 million.

Who won the Golden Slipper in 2022?

Last year the Golden Slipper was won by a filly called Fireburn. On that occasion Fireburn was ridden by jockey Brenton Avdulla and recorded a time of 1:12.79.

Fireburn finished ahead of Best Of Bordeaux and Coolangatta who both placed, collecting the biggest and most significant win of its career to date.

Surprisingly, Fireburn was not a single-figure fancy, but a double-digit delight. She became only the second horse in the last decade to win the race after starting above 10.00 for the outright win.

Golden Slipper 2023 Field

The Golden Slipper 2023 has a capacity field of 16, as well as four emergency spots in the unlikely event a horse is scratched before the race.

The full Golden Slipper 2023 field is as follows:

Little Brose

Barber

Arkansaw Kid

Don Corleon

Cylinder

Red Resistance

Shinzon

King’s Gambit

Empire of Japan

Learning to Fly

Platinum Jubilee

Blanc De Blanc

Exploring

Lazzago

Steel City

Facile

Golden Slipper 2023 Tips

Cylinder

The clear favourite for the 2023 Golden Slipper is two-year-old colt Cylinder. Trained by James Cummings and ridden by James McDonald, all the early money is for this particular horse.

Cylinder meets some key criteria that is synonymous with previous winners of the slipper.

32 of the last 34 winners have won two races prior, while 14 of the last 15 winners have won or run second in their final lead up race. Cylinder has more than met these specifications, winning its last three races including the Todman Stakes on March 4th.

A clear favourite and for good reason, Cylinder is definitely the horse to beat on March 18th.

Red Resistance

Red Resistance presents an interesting option ahead of this year’s Golden Slipper.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained colt was Cylinder’s biggest challenger at the Todman Stakes this year and even started the race as the favourite.

While he was bested by Cylinder on that occasion he ran valiantly and will be looking to return the favour come race day at Rosehill.

Don Corleone

Another colt to keep an eye on is the Peter and Paul Snowden trained Don Corleone.

He ran first at Royal Randwick earlier this year at the Petaluma Handicap and the firmer footing of the 1200m of Rosehill should favour him.

In addition to this, the 10.00 he is paying at the time of writing, might be an offer you can’t refuse.

Learning To Fly

Trained by Annabel Neasham, Learning To Fly has amassed $1,470,000 in career earnings to date.

A talented steed, this filly’s biggest win to date came at Royal Randwick, where she ran first in the Yarraman Park Reisling Stakes.

Ridden by Chad Schofield, there has been a lot of interest in this horse and as a result she is currently the second favourite for the slipper behind Cylinder.

Her many backers will be hoping to see her live up to her name and watch her fly down the track on race day.

Under The Radar Options

Blanc De Blanc

A decent shout for a place, Blanc De Blanc has had a string of second-placed finishes to her name this year.

Drawn wide at barrier 12 is not ideal, but for a horse of this calibre to be paying well over 25.00 for the win is still immense value.

As far as smokeys, there are far worse ones than Blanc De Blanc.

Shinzo

Drawn in the first barrier dramatically increases the appeal of this Chris Waller trained colt.

Another big tick in the plus column is the fact that Shinzo won the Darley Pago Pago stakes earlier this week, which is run at Rosehill, the same place as the Golden Slipper.

With one of the world’s best jockeys on his back in Ryan Moore and paying 15.00 at the time of writing, Shinzo presents a very enticing underdog indeed.

Golden Slipper 2023 Details

Date: Saturday, March 18, 2023

Track: Rosehill Racecourse

Distance: 1200m

Race type: 2YO Open Set Weight C&G 56.5kg F 54.5kg

Status: Group 1
