2023 Golden Rose Stakes Tips

The $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes, run over 1400m at Rosehill, is the first coming together of some of Australia’s best three-year-olds of the new racing season. The race is relatively new, having been first run in 2003.

The Golden Rose Stakes is part of a trilogy of “Golden” races run in Sydney at Rosehill. It is the middle peg of the $5 million Golden Slipper (1200m), for two-year-olds, run in the autumn and the $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m), for four-year-olds, which is run in the spring to coincide with the famous Derby Day at Flemington.

This Saturday, the dynamic Shinzo, the winner of the 2023 Golden Slipper will be attempting to join Forensics when he resumes from a spell in the Golden Rose with his champion Irish rider Ryan Moore flying in to ride him, as he did to steer him home in the Slipper. It is testimony to trainer Chris Waller’s opinion of Shinzo that he thinks he’s good enough to win a race the quality of the Golden Rose without a lead-up race. The job isn’t easier with Shinzo drawn out in barrier 10, which will influence his place in the Golden Rose Stakes tips.

Shinzo will have to overcome two other Group 1 winners from last season – the Waller-trained Militarize and the Ciaron Maher/David Eustace-trained King Colorado. Both those colts have had impressive lead-up runs. Punters will be keen on these three colts in the Golden Rose Stakes tips.

Add to the mix, the brilliant Cylinder – second to Shinzo in the Slipper – who has won his two starts this spring in brilliant style, and the exciting Melbourne filly Charm Stone, who comes into the race of two outstanding wins, and she’s drawn barrier 1, which will appeal to those who have her in their Golden Rose Stakes tips.

Also well drawn to get a cosy run is Encap (barrier 3), who produced a big finish to win the G3 Ming Dynasty Stakes to beat Moravia (barrier 4) over this course and distance two weeks ago. Libertad beat Moravia in the important lead-up, the San Domenico Stakes, and the Mahar-Eustace team have a big opinion of Nadal, who has a flashing finish.

The racing tip is it will be an exciting and intriguing contest and the winner will join some of the brilliant past winners such as Jacquinot, The Autumn Sun, Trapeze Artist, Bivouac, Zoustar and Forensics.

The Leading Golden Rose Stakes Tips

Encap: It was hard not to be captivated by Encap’s finishing burst to win the Ming Dynasty Stakes over this course on September 9, when he drew well and burst through between horses. He’s drawn in 3 to get a similar run and, although he’s small, he’s a colt with a big personality to go with his talent. He’s our top Golden Rose Stakes racing tip.

King Colorado: This colt has had unusual preparation in that he started off in August in the G1 Winx Stakes (1400m, Randwick) against the older horses – and should have finished closer than ninth – but he hasn’t been seen since. He has trialled strongly, and he might be the best of a stellar group.

Charm Stone: She is attempting to join Forensics as the only fillies to win the Golden Rose. History shows it’s not easy for a filly to win, but trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent won last year’s Golden Rose with Jacquinot, which is a racing tip in that they know she has the necessary talent.
