The Golden Rose Stakes, run over 1400m at Rosehill, was originally the Peter Pan Stakes, first run in 1978. It became the Golden Rose in 2003 and was elevated to a Group 1 in 2009. The Golden Rose is now a key race for Australia’s best 3YOs, and a lead-in race to the G1 Sportsbet Caulfield Guineas (1600m), run at Caulfield in the middle of October.

Some of the great names to win the Golden Rose include Broadsiding, Ole Kirk, The Autumn Sun, Zoustar and the only filly and Golden Slipper winner to win, Forensics.

Last year’s Golden Rose was won by the James Cummings-trained Broadsiding, beating stablemate Traffic Warden and Mayfair.

Golden Rose Stakes – Race and Time: Race 8 (4.05 pm)

Weather and Track

The Rosehill track was rated a Good 4 on Wednesday. With the BOM predicting dry weather with temperatures up to 30 degrees on Friday and Saturday, bring out the sunscreen and turn on the sprinklers. This track will likely race Good 3 by race time.

The rail is out True for the entire circuit. Traditionally, rail true on a good surface favours on-pace runners, however, coming off some serious wet weather, watch the early races for a pattern especially if the rail is a no-go zone.

The Trainers

Two trainers dominate the 2025 Golden Rose Stakes field. Champion Sydney trainer Chris Waller has four of the nine starters, and Melbourne’s top man, Ciaron Maher, has two. Waller’s quartet of colts are in racebook order, Beiwacht, Wodeton, Autumn Boy and Sixties. Maher’s pair are the colt State Visit and the outstanding filly Tempted.

Waller has won a record equalling three Golden Rose Stakes, including with The Autumn Sun (2018), the sire of Autumn Boy. Maher is chasing his first.

Gerald Ryan (who trained in partnership with Sterling Alexiou) won with Trapeze Artist in 2017. Ryan and Alexiou will saddle Skyhook. Veteran trainer John Hawkes, who trains with his sons Michael and Wayne, trained Paratroopers to win in 2005, and as a partnership with Ole Kirk in 2020. The Hawkes have Nepotism running for them. Kris Lees (Rivellino) is yet to win a Golden Rose.

The Jockeys

Only two jockeys in this field have a Golden Rose trophy on their mantelpiece. Champion jockey James McDonald (Wodeton) has won three Golden Rose Stakes – two short of record holder Hugh Bowman – including last year’s winner Broadsiding. Kerrin McEvoy (Skyhook) has won two Golden Roses, the most recent on The Autumn Sun (2018).

In an interesting sidebar, Chad Schofield (State Visit) will be attempting to emulate his father, Glyn, who rode Manawanui to a surprise win in 2011.

The Speed Map

The Golden Rose Stakes will be an intriguing race of tactics. The only sure thing is that Sixties will lead, as he did to win the Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) at Rosehill two weeks ago, but don’t expect an above average tempo. Beiwacht will race forward from barrier 2. He sat outside the leader in The Run To The Rose (1200m) on the same day, but was run down by Tempted, who will likely look for cover in the ruck of the field from her wide draw.

Expect a positive ride by Kerrin McEvoy on Skyhook, who settled fourth in The Run To The Rose. If you go back to the autumn, Skyhook led throughout to win the Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) at this track. McEvoy could be bold again.

Also handy behind the speed will be Wodeton, who gets blinkers first time and has drawn barrier one, and it’s possible that Autumn Boy, also with blinkers first time, could roll forward.

The back swoopers will be Nepotism, Tempted, State Visit and Rivellino.

Points of Interest

Chasing history: Only one filly has won the Golden Rose, and that filly, Forensic, was a near champion, having also won the Golden Slipper earlier in the year. The favourite Tempted is the only filly in this year’s race, and she was a luckless third in the Slipper.

Significant Gear Changes: Trainer Chris Waller has added blinkers first time to his top colts, Wodeton (who wore winkers last time) and the Autumn Boy. The blinkers should sharpen the Autumn Boy to be competitive. The Hawkes stable has added winkers to Nepotism’s gear.

Golden Rose Stakes 2025 Racing Tips

The Golden Rose Top Tip

Skyhook

All the attention was on Tempted when she charged clear to win The Run To The Rose two weeks ago, but Skyhook’s performance to run third was just as good. He settled fifth, following a hot tempo, only to run into backsides when Tempted had clear running. The colt kicked home strongly when clear. He had won The Rosebud before that. Don’t be surprised if McEvoy sends Skyhook forward in a race bereft of speed. He’s looks to be tremendous value.

The Golden Rose Dangers

Tempted

This dynamic little filly is trying to do what only one other filly has been able to do. Her finishing sprint in The Run To The Rose was awesome and she’ll be ridden to reproduce that. Trainer Ciaron Maher has been bullish in the press about her chances. Her slick turn-of-foot is her weapon.

Wodeton

This is a race his owners, Coolmore Stud, will be desperate to win following the unexpected death during the week of Wodeton’s champion sire Wootton Bassett. Trainer Chris Waller has added blinkers, and the colt has drawn perfectly in barrier one.

Autumn Boy

One of four topline colts in the Waller team. His sire, The Autumn Sun, won this race in 2018 with a big finish. With blinkers first time, expect this Boy to be sharper than he was when second in the Ming Dynasty. Right up to winning.

The Golden Rose Roughies

Nepotism

He has lost admirers because of his seemingly lacklustre first-up run in The Run To The Rose, when he got back and couldn’t stay with Wodeton in the sprint home. Trainers, Team Hawkes, have tweaked his gear with winkers. Expect a big improvement.

State Visit

Like Wodeton, he’s owned by Coolmore Stud and he’s a son of their stallion Wootton Bassett, who died during the week. State Visit has won only a maiden, but he’s Group 1 placed in the autumn and his trainer Ciaron Maher rates him highly. Capable of of causing an upset.
