Golden Eagle Racing Tips – 1 November

30/10/2025|SB Staff|Horse Racing Tips

The $10m Golden Eagle is a Group 1 race in waiting. In a short six years it has become one of the richest and most important races in Australia during the Spring Racing Carnival, and has attracted incredible interest from overseas, as it has done again this year with runners from Japan and England.

Golden Eagle 2025 Preview and Details

Track: Randwick.

Distance/type: 1500m. 4YOs. Set Weights.

Date: Saturday, 1 November.

Total prizemoney: $10,000,000

First prize: $5,250,000

Golden Eagle – Race and Time: Race 8 (4.45 pm)

Weather and Track

The Randwick track was rated a Good 4 on Wednesday. The warm weather – mid-20s – with some showers Thursday and Friday.

The rail is true.

The Trainers

Six trainers have shared the spoils of the Golden Eagle prize money since the new race was first run in 2019. Chris Waller won the first with Kolding, followed by James Cummings (Colette), Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr (I’m Thunderstruck), Peter Moody (I Wish I Win), Japan’s Keiji Yoshimura (Obamburumai) and last year’s winner, William Haggas (Lake Forest) from England.

Waller has the chance to make it two as he saddles the hot favourite Autumn Glow and the outsider Lord Penman.

The Japanese return for a second win. Trainer Shinsuke Hashiguchi has the highly rated Panja Tower to be ridden by Japanese jockey, Kohei Matsuyama.

Haggas’s countryman Hugo Palmer has sent his gelding Seagulls Eleven to be ridden by Haggas’s jockey Tom Marquand.

The Jockeys

Like the trainers, the six editions of the Golden Eagle have been won by different jockeys. The now retired Glen Boss won on Kolding in 2019, followed by Koby Jennings, who was a surprise winner on Colette, Hugh Bowman (I’m Thunderstruck), Luke Nolen (I Wish I Win), Josh Parr (Obamburumai) and the Irishman Cieren Fallon won on the English horse Lake Forest last year.

Of that group, only Josh Parr has a ride this year. Parr will steer the Victorian Feroce.

James McDonald is usually in Melbourne to ride at Derby Day, but it’s a sign that he thinks he can win on the unbeaten Autumn Glow for him to be at Randwick.

Japan’s Kohei Matsuyama is no stranger to riding Panja Tower, who he rode to win the G3 Keeneland Cup at Sapporo in August and the G1 NHK Mile at Fuchu, Tokyo in May. He rode Breakup to finish unplaced in last year’s Melbourne Cup.

Tom Marquand (Seagulls Eleven) is affectionately known as “Aussie Tom” for his riding a succession of big-race winners in Sydney for visiting English trainer William Haggas. Marquand has ridden 14 wins and 20 placings from 130 rides at Randwick. His wins include three G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Dubai Honour and Addeybb (2), a Gq1 Tancred Stakes on Dubai Honour and a G1 Ranvet Stakes on Addeybb.

The Speed Map

Tempo prediction: good/fast

The speed will come from Perfumist (barrier one) and Fully Lit (barrier 14). Shangri La Spring and Cristal Clear also like to race forward.

Victorians Feroce and Evaporate will be handy. Linebacker likes to stalk the speed. Sepals best performances have been when he is ridden aggressively. The favourite, Autumn Glow, has drawn barrier nine, which will allow jockey James McDonald to settle midfield with a trail.

The back runners who will be running on include Willydoit and the internationals, Panja Tower, and Seagulls Eleven. Panja Tower likes galloping room and he builds strongly into his races. Seagulls Eleven led when he won a Group 3 1600m at Goodwood two runs back, but in most of his races this year has settled back in the field.

Point of Interest

Significant gear change: Feroce will wear winkers for the first time. Trainer Ciaron Maher has added blinkers to Willydoit. Mayfair gets blinkers again.

Golden Eagle 2025 Racing Tips

Golden Eagle Top Tip

Autumn Glow

Unbeaten in seven starts. Broke through for her first Group 1 in the Epsom Handicap (1600m) at this track. Perfectly draw and James McDonald rides.

Golden Eagle Dangers

Panja Tower

Regarded in Japan as a better horse than the Japanese winner Obamburumai, who won this race with a brilliant finish along the inside in 2023. He likes clean air in his races. Expect him to be the danger on his best form.

Linebacker

Randwick Guineas winner over 1600m here in the autumn. Big win first-up and he will be vastly improved. Drawn to track the speed.

Evaporate

Right back to his best form. No luck when checked early and beat all but Transatlantic in the G1 Toorak Handicap (1600m). Transatlantic has since franked that form. Drawn to get a nice run.

Golden Eagle Roughy

Willidoit

New Zealand Derby winner last season. Trainer Ciaron Maher is training him to have speed in his legs. He has added blinkers for an extra boast. Don’t be shocked if he runs a big race at good odds.

Seagulls Eleven

Mystery runner. Profiles similar to last year’s winner and has form around him this year. Top jockey who knows Randwick on board and he’s drawn a good gate for a soft midfield run.

Golden Eagle Same Race Multi (pick a combination)

Autumn Glow – top three

Panja Tower, Linebacker – top four

Evaporate – top five

Willydoit, Seagulls Eleven – top seven
