Feehan Stakes Tips 2023

The Feehan Stakes has an interesting background. It was first run at Moonee Valley in 1948, and named in honour of John F. Feehan, who owned Feehan Farm on which Moonee Valley racecourse was built after he leased it to William Samuel Cox in the late 1880s.

It’s fitting that the Feehan-Cox connection continues with the G2 $500,000 Feehan Stakes, run over 1600 metres, offering the winner a guaranteed start in the $5 million G1 W.S. Cox Plate (2040m), run at the Valley on October 28.

Nine horses have won the Feehan Stakes and gone on to win the Cox Plate; the most recent was El Segundo in 2007, but other notables to complete the double include Northerly, Sunline, Better Loosen Up, Rubiton, Strawberry Road and Rising Fast.

Feehan Stakes field

This year’s Feehan Stakes field is a bottler, and intriguing in that it could be the race that launches the career of an exciting galloper, Globe, who goes into the race unbeaten in four starts and in search of a Cox Plate golden ticket.

The quirky Globe is very raw and untested at this level, especially around this tricky track. However, he has galloped twice at the track recently, and rider Jamie Kah told the media on Tuesday morning that she “hasn’t ridden a horse like him for ages.” That’s a very impressive Feehan Stakes tip from a top jockey. Globe has been plunged in Feehan Stakes betting markets.

Leading Melbourne Cup contenders kicking off their spring carnival campaigns in the Feehan Stakes, include Goldman, Lunar Flare and Francesco Guardi. There are also solid Feehan Stakes tips for Pinstriped, Tuvalu and Attrition, who hold a strong form line through Mr Brightside from the P.B. Lawrence Stakes, and Chris Waller’s 2022 Cox Plate third place-getter El Bogedon.

Champion jockey Damien Oliver, who retires in December, has won five Feehan Stakes – the first on Tristalove 29 years ago – will have his final ride in the Feehan on Perth galloper Alaskan God.

The racing tip from the weather bureau for those having a wager on Saturday is to expect the track to be wet after a cold snap sweeps through on Thursday and Friday.

The leading Feehan Stakes tips 2023

Globe: Trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr admit they don’t know the ceiling for this four-year-old gelding, who won his only four starts in an impressive campaign from March to May. He’s done a lot of work leading into this race, so expect jockey Jamie Kah to not only roll forward but also look for some cover. Impossible not to rate him the top Feehan Stakes tip.

Pinstriped: The big chestnut is building his profile. He tracked Mr Brightside throughout in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield on August 19, and held on well for second, beaten 1.75 lengths in fast time. He will be greatly improved and is proven at Moonee Valley on soft going, which is a valuable racing tip.

Attrition: He ran a huge race in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield which was run at a near record tempo, yet he raced wide without cover and held on for fifth behind the star Mr Brightside. He’s good enough to be in your Feehan Stakes tips.
