Daily Racing Tips – 7 August

Sportsbet Sandown Lakeside Racing Tips

Soft 6 on Monday and likely to remain in the soft range. Minimal rain predicted. Rail out 3m.

Difficult meeting at Sportsbet Sandown to find standout winners, but we might be able to bookend the meeting.

Race 1 (12.25 pm) Maiden Plate (1600m)

Former New Zealander in the Ciaron Maher stable. Lot to like about his first Australian start when he hit the line strongly for second over 1400m at Lakeside on July 17. Took a while to wind up in that race, but he’ll be fitter and the extra 200m is perfect.

Racing Tip: Ongatiti

Race 8 (4.30 pm) Benchmark 64 Handicap (1300m)

Easy debut winner at Ballarat in May when he led throughout, and then resumed with a sound third behind the exciting First Settler at Flemington (1000m) on July 20, when he set the pace. Drops back in class.

Racing Tip: Skipjack (best bet)

Canterbury Racing Tips

Soft 7 on Monday. Minimal showers predicted. Likely to improve but stay in the soft range. Rail out 3m.

Race 2 (2.00 pm) Super Maiden (1200m)

First starter for Chris Waller. Son of I Am Invincible and former star mare Spright. In typical Waller fashion, he’s had two very cosy trials that suggest there’s a lot more under the bonnet. Importantly, James McDonald rides.

Racing Tip: Behaviour

Race 3 (2.35 pm) Benchmark 64 Handicap (1100m)

Seems to have hit form for new trainers, Team Hawkes. Settled off the pace but sprinted quickly to beat Flying Rani at Wyong. Drawn to get a good run in a very winnable race.

Racing Tip: Misty Legend (best bet)

Race 4 (3.10 pm) Benchmark 64 Handicap (1100m)

James Cummings-trained mare resuming from a spell. She went out after an easy wet-track win at Kembla Grange and she’s trialled excellently for her return. James McDonald rides from a good draw.

Racing Tip: Zeitung

Doomben Racing Tips

Track rated soft 5 on Monday. Warm weather. Likely upgrade. Rail out 7m.

Race 2 (1.08 pm) Maiden Plate (1350m)

He may have surprised the Tony Gollan stable on debut when unwanted in the betting, but he hit the line hard from well back for fourth at Ipswich (1200m) on July 24. James Orman rides again, and the 1350m looks ideal.

Racing Tip: No Brakes

Race 5 (2.35 pm) Benchmark 64 (1650m)

Cape Crusader to the rescue. Strong finish to win at Toowoomba (1625m) on June 22. He didn’t race for a month, dropped back to 1350m at Ipswich, where he ran on for third behind Golden Decade. Better for that and better suited back out to 1600m.

Racing Tip: Cape Crusader (best bet)

Belmont Racing Tips

Rated Soft 6 Monday. Rain predicted. Rail out 20m with cutaway.

Race 1 (1.14 pm WA time) Handicap (1000m)

The speedy Sky Duke looks well placed to lead and win. Solid first-up at Bunbury when he led and was nabbed late. He was easy in the betting suggesting he need that hit out. Harder to catch this time for father-son trainer-jockey combination of Neville and Brad Parnham.

Racing Tip: Sky Duke

Daily Racing Tips – Jockeys to follow

Sportsbet Sandown: Ethan Brown

Brown is in great form. He rode a double at this track on Sunday and he’s ridden seven city winners since 1 August. He has only four rides on Wednesday … all with a winning chance.

Canterbury: James McDonald

Cracking book of rides for the champion jockey, and there’s some value there as well.
