Cox Plate 2026 Betting Prediction and Odds

A highly important race on the calendar, the Cox Plate is regarded as Australasia’s premier weight-for-age championship and is one of Australia’s Grand Slam races.
It is a defining test of the best middle-distance racehorses, rather than simply another valuable Group 1. If you are curious how weight-for-age middle-distance championships sit alongside the different types of horse races, it is worth a closer look.
And this year’s edition will be a little different. Flemington is hosting the race, with the traditional home of Moonee Valley undergoing redevelopment.
The 2026 Cox Plate Day is Saturday, October 24, with the Cox Plate (race tie TBD) being the feature of the nine races on the card. But who are the race main picks? Let’s find out.
Quick Picks
Our pick: Aeliana to win
Value bet: Warwoven each-way
Long shot: Light Infantry Man each-way
With win, value and each-way selections here, anyone still getting to grips with how horse racing betting works can brush up before backing them.
Betting Preview
The race is a Group 1 contest over a distance of 2,040 metres, featuring some of the best middle-distance horses. A total of $6 million is available in the prize purse, making it one of the largest.
Pace, barrier draw and track conditions could all influence the Cox Plate. A steady tempo may favour runners near the lead, while stronger early pressure could suit those finishing from behind.
The draw will affect positioning, and rain could improve the chances of some. Stamina and fitness are also important, while those with a lighter weight may have an advantage.
The venue change makes recent Turnbull form especially relevant. Light Infantry Man finished second, Aeliana third and Sir Delius fourth behind Cosmic Crusader, whose participation remained undecided on Monday (final declarations on Tuesday).
The barrier drawing and ground can also have an impact on how the 2026 Cox Plate plays out.
Betting Markets to Watch
The betting odds have Sir Delius as the early favourite, with Aeliana, Ceolwulf, and Warwoven all thought to be legitimate contenders.
Sir Delius has winning Flemington form through his 2025 Turnbull success, but his fourth when favourite in this year’s renewal leaves him with something to prove. Aeliana finished ahead of him this year, which adds to her case as a value pick as a potential winner.
She won the Ranvet over 2,000m and the Tancred during her previous preparation, demonstrating both top-level ability and stamina.
She came third in the Turnbull Stakes, finishing strongly from back in the field and passing Sir Delius late, but was still nearly three lengths behind the winner, Cosmic Crusader
Warwoven arrives after completing the Golden Rose-Caulfield Guineas double, and carries just 49.5kg under the weight-for-age conditions.
This makes him a serious threat, but the step up in trip to 2,040m from 1,600m against quality horses could leave him short of winning. His strong Guineas finish offers encouragement.
Our Prediction
Check the latest Cox Plate betting odds at Sportsbet.
Our prediction is for Aeliana to be the likely winner, with our value pick on Warwoven in the each-way.
It is worth looking at whether Aeliana overtakes Sir Delius as the pre-race favourite, which will strengthen their case. Nine favourites going into the race have come out on top from 2006-2025.
A long shot is Light Infantry Man in each-way. He has three Flemington wins, including two Australian Cups, and a second in the recent Turnbull Stakes, so is bringing both experience and form to this race that cannot be ignored.
