The Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m), at Flemington on Derby Day, is the target race for Australia’s best young sprinters, especially the colts looking to enhance their value as future stallions.

Leading trainer Chris Waller has dominated this race in recent years, winning six of the past 11. He will saddle two chances, including the hot favourite, Beiwacht.

There is nothing more thrilling than a wall of horses charging down the famous Flemington straight 1200m.

Some of the greats to have won this race since 1969, when it was upgraded from a scamper for our best two-year-olds, include the first winner Vain, Century, Taj Rossi, Surround, Manikato, Rancher, Courtza, Encosta De Lago Weekend Hussler, Sepoy, Zoustar, In Secret and Home Affairs.

The Trainers

Chris Waller has made a habit of winning the Coolmore Stud Stakes. Since he won his first with Zoustar, he has won this race five times, including last year with Switzerland. This year, Waller has a chance for his seventh Coolmore Stud Stakes with exciting favourite Beiwatch and the unbeaten Skyglider.

It’s 31 years since Gerald Ryan trained Racer’s Edge to win this race. He returns this year, with trainer partner Sterling Alexiou, with Skyhook. Peter Snowden won his only Coolmore Stud Stakes with the champion Sepoy in 2011. He hopes for a second with Beadman, the horse named after former champion jockey, Darren Beadman, and Raging Force.

Anthony and Sam Freedman are chasing their first Coolmore Stud Stakes with Tentyris. Anthony’s brother Lee won with Encosta De Lago in 1996.

The Coolmore Stud Stakes has been a kind race for the famous Hayes family. It has eluded the now Kong Kong-based David Hayes, but his father Colin won with Kaapstad in 1987. David’s sons, Ben, Will and JD will saddle Tycoon Star.

Leading Victorian trainer Ciaron Maher (Jimmy Recard) is looking for his first win.

The Jockeys

James McDonald has won three of the past four Coolmore Stud Stakes, including last year’s winner Switzerland. He will be riding at Randwick on Saturday. The colt that he would be normally riding for trainer Chris Waller is the favourite, Beiwatcht, who will have Adam Hyeronimous in the saddle. The “Hippo” has ridden Beiwacht in seven of his eight starts, including the G1 Golden Rose.

Apart from McDonald, Kerrin McEvoy (three wins) and Craig Williams (two wins) are the most successful of the current jockeys. McEvoy will ride Waller’s second-stringer, Skyglider. Williams, who rode his first in 1997 (Show No Emotion), and a second in 2020 on September Run, has the mount on Skyhook.

Mark Zahra (Tentyris) is the only jockey with a ride in this race who has won it in the past. He rode Merchant Navy to win in 2017.

The Speed Map

Tempo prediction: good/fast

The Coolmore Stud Stakes, with a competitive bunch of speedy three-year-olds, is rarely run at a dawdle. This year, there are two bold-going sprinters who will set the tempo – McGaw and Raging Force. Also expected to go forward is the Newcastle-trained Hidden Motive and the free-running favourite Beiwacht, who should settle on the back of McGaw as both are drawn wide. Skyglider is another likely to go forward.

Beadman and Legacy Bound should be midfield with Tycoon Star. Skyhook raced on the pace when fourth in the Golden Rose. From barrier two, he will likely be looking for cover.

Tentyris and the filly, My Gladiola, are the best chances of the swoopers.

Points of Interest

Significant gear change: The fast but keen McGaw has the lugging bit off. Tycoon Star gets the winkers off and the visors on. Skyhook will wear winkers for the first time.

The sole filly: My Gladiola is the only filly hoping to upset the colts and geldings. Thirteen fillies have won since the Coolmore Stud Stakes was first run for three-year-olds in 1969.

Following Dad: Skyglider is a son of the 2016 winner, Flying Artie.

Coolmore Stud Stakes 2025 Racing Tips

Coolmore Stud Stakes Top Tip

Beiwacht

Riding this colt aggressively has seen him transform into the best sprinting colt in the country. The wide draw, following speedster McGaw, sets this race up perfectly for him.

Coolmore Stud Stakes Dangers

Tentyris

Like Beiwacht, he is bred and owned by international conglomerate, Godolphin. Storming finish to win the Gothic Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield. He has been set for this race. He will be the one charging late.

My Gladiola

High-class filly. Loves the straight track. Good win at Flemington two starts back and then just missed catching McGaw in the G2 Danehill Stakes (1100m). Right in this with the right run.

Beadman

Exciting colt who was stiff not to win the G2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill. That race is usually a good guide to this. Trialled impressively down the straight last week.

Skyhook

The form line for you to consider this colt is his luckless third behind Tempted and Beiwacht in the Run to the Rose at Rosehill (1200m) in September. He has been freshened for this.

Coolmore Stud Stakes Roughies

Skyglider

Unbeaten in two starts, and he backs up for last Saturday’s win in the Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) at Randwick . You have to trust Chris Waller and throw this one into the mix.

Coolmore Stud Stakes Same Race Multi (pick a combination)

Beiwacht – top two

Tentyris – top three

Beadman – top four

My Gladiola, Skyhook – top five

Skyglider – top seven
