If you are interested in playing early in The Everest markets, you must take notice of what happens on Saturday at Randwick when some of racing’s star sprinters clash in the $1 million G3 Concorde Stakes (set weights and penalties), run over a scorching 1000 metres.

The first three editions of The Everest – 2017-2019 – were won by the same horse, Redzel, who began his quest each time by winning the Concorde Stakes.

The grand old campaigner, Nature Strip, did the Concorde-Everest double in 2021, and the highlight for anyone dabbling in the Concorde Stakes tips 2023 is that Nature Strip, now nine, is back. The old boy has had a disappointing 12 months since he won at Royal Ascot in England in mid-2022, but his trainer Chris Waller is confident he’s got the zest back in Nature Strip’s chestnut legs. That’s a strong racing tip from Waller, because any sign the horse wasn’t right, he said the gelding would be retired.

Nature Strip’s clash with In Secret dominates the pre-race discussions and it seems everyone has a different Concorde Stakes take. However, there’s another horse in the field who will keep the pair honest, and that’s the greybeard, 10-year-old Eduardo, who won the Concorde Stakes in 2022.

Interestingly, James McDonald is the regular ride for the two favourites Nature Strip and In Secret. The Concorde Stakes tip from McDonald is that he’s sticking with his old favourite Nature Strip. The question remains, is it sentiment or good judgement?

Apart from Nature Strip, Eduardo and Redzel, the Concorde Stakes has been won by some outstanding sprinters Gytrash, Tiger Tees, Private Steer, Reward For Effort, Guineas, Final Card and Joanne.

The leading Concorde Stakes tips 2023

Nature Strip: The big fella has enjoyed a good paddock break after his poor form in the autumn when he finished sixth in the G1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) and fourth behind I Wish I Win in the G1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m). If Nature Strip’s recent trial form is any guide, trainer Chris Waller has been able to resurrect the career of this wonderful sprinter, and if the best of Nature Strip turns up on Saturday, take the racing tip, he’ll win. The wide draw, barrier 11, probably suits him as he likes to stride forward at his leisure.

In Secret: She is the best sprinting mare in Australia after wins in the G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) and G1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) – both at Flemington – in the past 12 months. She has had two soft trials leading into this race, each time hitting the line strongly with James McDonald in the saddle. Even if Nature Strip is close to his best, this classy mare has a place in most Concorde Stakes tips.

Eduardo: His career looked over after a couple of poor runs in the autumn. Trainer Joe Pride decided to persevere with a final campaign for the 10-year-old and the old boy has looked bright in his trials and gallops. If he’s going to win a race this spring, it will be this one – he won it last year – so he stays firmly in the Concorde Stakes tips, especially from barrier one. Expect him to set the pace.
