Caulfield Guineas 2023 Tips

As usual, the 2023 edition of the Caulfield Guineas is a captivating race, bringing together the Melbourne and Sydney form lines.

The Caulfield Guineas (1600m at Caulfield) is worth $3 million in prize money, but for a winning colt, it’s worth millions of dollars in value as a potential stud stallion.

Bush colt Steparty is the feel-good story of the Caulfield Guineas field. A David of a trainer in the shape of Horsham’s knockabout Paul Preusker up against the Goliaths of Australian racing such as trainers James Cummings, Peter and Paul Snowden and Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.

What a triumph winning the 2023 Caulfield Guineas would be for Preusker and his eclectic group of more than 40 owners from his local town, Bendigo and Swan Hill, who enthusiastically support their colt. Team Steparty has rejected massive offers to buy the colt from Hong Kong and, so far, Steparty hasn’t let them down by winning five from five, including his dynamic last-stride win in the G3 Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield on September 23.

Steparty already has given them a pay-day having won more than $500,000. However, a Caulfield Guineas win will not only net them a $1.8 million first prize, but also the value of Steparty will climb to more than $20 million as the owners of the big stud farms circle to secure the colt as a future stallion. This is Powerball on four legs.

The laconic Preusker is taking the media attention in his stride, although it helps to be hiding away from gazing eyes on his property almost three hours’ drive from Melbourne. If sentiment means anything, Steparty should be in the Caulfield Guineas tips of any racing fan.

Militarize comes from Sydney at the top of the Caulfield Guineas tips of most experts and punters. The exceptional son of Dundeel already has notched three Group 1s on his stable door, having won the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) and Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick in the autumn, and the Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill two weeks ago. He’s drawn wide in barrier 12, but that shouldn’t be a big concern because he doesn’t appreciate being bustled early, and he possesses a withering late sprint.

The tactics on King Colorado will be interesting. He was ridden back when he won the G1 JJ Atkins Stakes (1600m) at Eagle Farm in June, but he has had little luck being ridden that way both runs this time in. The racing tip is that new jockey Michael Dee will be asked to roll forward from barrier 8 to put him into the contest and get an advantage on Militarize.

Others who will be in the Caulfield Guineas tips of fans includes Stutt Stakes winner Griff, Veight, Scheelite, Scentify and Southport Tycoon.

The Leading Caulfield Guineas Racing Tips

Steparty

Five wins from five starts for this bush-trained colt, but this is his biggest test taking on the best colts in Australia, such as Militarize and King Colorado, who have already won at Group 1 level. Steparty is more country toff than a bushwacker. From barrier 7, jockey John Allen can give him the run of the race. Steparty is the value play as the top Caulfield Guineas tip.

Militarize

Exceptional colt who has both stamina and a turn-of-foot that already has won him three Group 1 races. His jockey Brazilian wizard Joao Moreira produced him late with a sizzling burst to win the G1 Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill two weeks ago. He’s the leading Caulfield Guineas tip in the betting markets and he’s going to be hard to hold out.

King Colorado

Hopefully this well-bred colt can get the clear run that has been missing in his two starts this time in. He won the G1 JJ Atkins in the winter in Brisbane over this distance, and he should have tested the winner Fangirl in the G1 Winx Stakes (1400m) at Randwick in August. The racing tip is that The King has peaked, so expect a positive ride from Michael Dee.

Caulfield Guineas 2023 Odds
