Carlyon Stakes 2023 Racing Tips

25/08/2023|SB Staff|Horse Racing Tips

The Carlyon Stakes is one of the Moonee Valley Racing Club’s (MVRC) important early spring carnival races for horses preparing for the club’s feature spring Group 1 sprints, the $750,000 Moir Stakes (1000m) in September and the $2 million Manikato Stakes (1200m), run on Cox Plate day at Moonee Valley in late October.

The Carlyon Stakes, first run in 2011, is a $175,000 Listed class 1000m race run under the handicap conditions of set weights and penalties. The race is named after former MVRC chairman Norman Carlyon.

The Valley is a tricky, turning track with a short run from the home turn to the finish. The racing tip for those looking at the Moonee Valley betting markets is that the races are often won by horses with a proven record of handling the track.

One of the leading Carlyon Stakes tips will be Omni Man, trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott. He strung together three consecutive wins in Sydney before finishing third behind Sweet Ride at Moonee Valley on August 12. Expect him to be better for that Valley experience.

Sweet Ride also backs up from that win as one of the main Carlyon Stakes tips on Saturday.

The powerful training partnership of Ciaron Maher and David Eustace nominated two sprinters – last year’s winner Bella Nipotina and Generation – for the Carlyon Stakes 2023 before settling on Generation to represent the stable. Generation was a high-class three-year-old in 2021 when he won the G3 Red Anchor Stakes at Moonee Valley and the G3 Manfred Stakes at Caulfield, both over 1200m, but he hasn’t won since.

A good Carlyon Stakes tip is the announcement that top jockey Craig Williams has taken the ride of West Australian sprinter Acromantula, and track specialists Snapper – four wins at the Valley – and Midwest (unbeaten in three Valley runs) will be solid racing tips on that fact alone.

The Leading Carlyon Stakes Racing Tips 2023

Omni Man: It was a shame to see him beaten seconds behind Sweet Ride at Moonee Valley on August 12. He drew barrier one but lost his chance with a tardy beginning, which left him chasing tails before running on to just miss. Barrier two should see him able to dictate this race, which makes him the best Carlyon Stakes tip.

Sweet Ride: He showed a liking for Moonee Valley when he beat Omni Man over this course on August 12 when he sat on the pace and dashed clear at the 300m. He meets Omni Man on 1.5kg worse terms and Omni Man is drawn on his inside.

Acromantula: This West Australian sprinter showed good pace when third behind Sweet Ride and Omni Man in a blanket finish over this course on August 12. Craig Williams takes the ride and nobody rides the Valley better.

Snapper: Four of his six wins have been around Moonee Valley and he’s drawn barrier one. He returns to racing at his favourite track off some solid efforts in Group class in the autumn. He might be a value one to follow when checking the betting markets.
