Australian Oaks 2024 Race Tips

Australian Oaks 2024 Racing Tips

The $1 million Australian Oaks is one of four Group 1 races on the final day of The Championships, the feature two-day racing extravaganza that dominates the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

The Australian Oaks, run over the classic distance of 2400m at Randwick racecourse, is exclusive for three-year-old fillies, all carrying the set weight of 56kg. The Australian Oaks is race six, run at 2.40 pm (AEST)

The Australian Oaks has a rich history going back to its first running in 1885, although it had a hiatus between 1894 to 1921. Between 1922 and 1962 it was named the Adrian Knox Stakes.

Some of the great past winners include Verry Elleegant, Research, Bounding Away, Surround, Leilani, Light Fingers, Wenona Girl, Evening Peak and Flight.

Can They Beat Orchestral?

The winner of 2024 Australian Oaks could etch her name alongside those champion past winners if the Australian Oaks tips are any guide with the star New Zealand filly Orchestral expected to win.

Orchestral has been at the head of the Australian Oaks tips since she burst past her male rivals to win the G1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie, Auckland, on March 2. After that race, trainers Roger James and Robert Wellwood aimed her at Sydney, with either the Australian Derby or the Australian Oaks as her target.

The warm-up race was the G1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on March 30. Orchestral went to the post a $1.60 favourite, but punters who took the short price gulped on the home turn when a daring ride by Nash Rawiller on Tutta La Vita left Orchestral in her wake. It was only in the last 50 metres at Tutta La Vita weakened and the New Zealand filly surged with big strides to win by a half-length. Phew!

Post-race jockey James McDonald said he felt Orchestral was a “bit rusty” after four weeks between runs, explaining that she had to dig deep as the leaders were sprinting from well before the home turn.

James and Wellwood also made the quick decision that backing up Orchestral in seven days to run in the Derby wasn’t in her best interests, and all reports are that she has thrived leading in the Australian Oaks. Punters have taken the racing tip that the filly is at her top because she’s again a long odds-on favourite.

Orchestral has drawn barrier three. Expect McDonald to keep the big-striding filly away from the inside rail to give her clean air.

Zardozi for the Locals

The competition will come from the Sydney filly Zardozi, who in any other year would be at the top of the Australian Oaks tips. Trainer James Cummings toyed with “dodging” Orchestral by running her in last week’s Australian Derby, but he pulled her out on race morning to wait a week for a better racing surface. All indications are that the Randwick track will be close to good by Saturday.

Zardozi showed her staying talent in the spring with a comprehensive win in the VRC Oaks (2500m) at Flemington. She is aiming to be 19th filly to win the VRC Oaks-Australian Oaks double, and the first since Serenade Rose in 2006.

Of course, Tutta La Vita deserves to be in your Australian Oaks tips. Trainer Chris Waller has always had a big opinion of her and she showed she will handle the extra distance after her sustained sprint from the 600 metres in the Vinery Stud Stakes.

The Melbourne Form

The Melbourne form line comes from Brasilinna, Autumn Angel and Quintessa. The trio should be in your racing tips for an upset or Australian Oaks trifecta tips.

Brasilinna has the Zardozi form line from when she ran third in the VRC Oaks; Autumn Angel, under the care of Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman, won the G2 Kewney Stakes (1600m) at Flemington before finishing second in the G3 Adrian Knox Stakes; and Quintessa came from New Zealand to trainer Mark Walker’s Cranbourne stable only to be nudged out of the G2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley.

It's hard to see any other filly measuring up to be in the Australian Oaks tips.

The Leading 2024 Australian Oaks Tips

Orchestral

Co-trainer Roger James has a great record with his New Zealand raiders in the big Australian races, so you must take the racing tip when he says Orchestral could be the best horse he has trained. That puts her on top of the Australian Oaks tips.

Zardozi

Zardozi looks the logical danger to Orchestral. She loomed late with Orchestral in the Vinery Stud Stakes, but died on her run to finish third, beaten 1.35 lengths. If there is no improvement in Orchestral, we know there is improvement in Zardozi. She’s the value bet in your Australian Oaks tips.

Tutta La Vita

We are taking the angle the Vinery Stud Stakes is the best form line to find the Australian Oaks winner. Tutta La Vita’s second after taking off well before the home turn suggests she’s right in the mix of this race.

Quintessa

Stablemate of Orchestral. She has a touch of class. Although unproven at this distance, she’s best to stay and she gets champion jockey Opie Bossun to ride her from a good draw. Don’t underestimate her.
