All Aged Stakes 2024 Racing Tips

The All Aged Stakes is well named. In its long history tracing back to 1866, it has been won by horses of all ages, but especially a sweet race for three-year-olds colts and geldings. In fact, it’s not a bad race for mares either, and this year could be no exception.

The females have a good strike rate in the All Aged Stakes with nine fillies and mares winning nine of the past 23 editions of the autumn feature. Seven of the nine were mares, and the two fillies at won, English (2016) and Atlantic Jewel (2012), are the only fillies to win apart from Valicare in 1926.

The trend is on track to continue with the top three rated horses in this year’s race being mares – Chain Of Lightning, Espiona and Sunshine In Paris.

Espiona looks the mare most likely. Since trainer Chris Waller abandoned plans to make her a middle-distance galloper, her form has been exceptional against the best opposition. This is her fourth run in the campaign and she’s poised to peak. She won’t mind a bit of the predicted rain to fall on Randwick, so she looks to be the leading All Aged Stakes tip.

The three-year-old colt with the talent and the right trainer to upset the mares is Southport Tycoon. Trainer Ciaron Maher elected to miss the G1 Doncaster Mile (on April 6) because of the very wet track, but he believes he made the right decision because the colt, who hasn’t raced since winning the G1 Australian Guineas at Flemington on March 2, has thrived in Sydney. It’s a strong All Aged Stakes tip from Maher, who understands that a win for the colt will boost his stallion value.

Maher, who had a Group 1 double at Randwick last week – headed by Pride Of Jenni’s incredible Queen Elizabeth Stakes success – has kept Southport Tycoon up to the mark with two impressive trials at Warwick Farm. The most recent three-year-old to win the All Aged Stakes is Giga Kick in 2023, and the All Aged Stakes history is riddled with top-class three-year-olds in its winners’ list.

The horse with the talent to win, but who has been out of form of late, is Private Eye. In last year’s All Aged Stakes, the gelding finished second behind Giga Kick, but he’s not going as well this year. Trainer Joe Pride was encouraged by a recent trial win by Private Eye. If you take Pride on trust that he’s resurrected Private Eye, the old fella should be in your All Aged Stakes tips.

The decision to send Melbourne galloper Buffalo River north for the All Aged Stakes 2024 should guarantee a fast tempo, because over 1400m, the Mike Moronet-trained likes to run along in front, so expect him to run a cheeky race.

Although it is not part of the two-meeting The Championships, the All Aged Stakes, worth $1.5 million, is a prize worth targeting at the end of the Sydney Autumn Carnival. Along with the G1 Champagne Stakes (1600m, for two-year-olds), it’s the highlight of Saturday’s meeting.

The All Aged Stakes is race eight at 3.40pm (AEST) and it follows the Champagne Stakes, race seven, at 3.00pm.

The Leading All Aged Stakes Tips

Espiona

High-class mare who has been racing extremely well in top company this campaign, but without winning. Trainer Chris Waller has found the ideal distance for her after her strong-finishing sixth behind Chain Of Lightning in the G1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) beaten less than a length. Worth noting her most recent win was The $2 million The Invitation over this course and distance in the spring. She’s the top All Aged Stakes tip.

Southport Tycoon

Hasn’t raced since winning the G1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 2, but trainer Ciaron Maher believes he is both fresh and fit to win again. Jockey Jamie Kah knows him well, and he’s drawn perfectly in barrier five.

Sunshine In Paris

This campaign she has won the G1 Surround Stakes over this course and distance in February, beaten Espiona in the G2 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill before finishing second behind Zapateo in the G3 The Galaxy (1100m) and fifth behind Chain Of Lightning in the G1 TJ Smith Stakes. Front barrier two, jockey Ryan Maloney should have her in the box seat, so she should be prominent in all racing tips.

Private Eye

He was heavily backed to win the G12 The Galaxy – firming $10 into $6.50 – but he ran poorly for 11th behind Zapateo. Trainer Joe Pride has freshened Private Eye and he looked good winning a recent Warwick Farm trial. He’s too good to leave out of your All Aged Stakes tips.

Chain Of Lightning

The grey mare caused an upset to win the G1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick last week. 1200m seems to be her sweet spot and she prefers rain-affected going. When doing your racing tips, keep a watch on the BOM because up to 15mm of rain is predicted to fall on Saturday. Rachel King takes the ride, replacing Damian Lane, who has elected to ride Amelia’s Jewel in $5 million The Quokka at Ascot in Perth.
