Yorkshire Oaks 2026: Kalpana Headlines York

kalpana leads yorkshire oaks

The Yorkshire Oaks 2026 has taken shape as one of the season's most compelling Group One contests, with King George winner Kalpana confirmed at the head of 15 declarations for Thursday's showpiece at York.

Andrew Balding's mare arrives fresh from proving herself among the best middle-distance horses in Europe, and this year's Yorkshire Oaks field looks arguably the strongest in years.

Her victory in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot last month, where she got the better of Calandagan, marked her out as a genuine star of the older-horse division.

Now dropping back to face her own sex, she chases a fourth win at the highest level in the Yorkshire Oaks.

For Australian followers of European flat racing, the appeal is obvious: York's Ebor Festival regularly draws horses that later cross the world, and this year's Yorkshire Oaks doubles as something of a rematch of that Ascot clash between Kalpana and Aidan O'Brien's Minnie Hauk.

It could well turn out to be the rivalry that defines the whole season.

The Legends Global-sponsored race, run on Ladies Day at York, has attracted quality throughout. Kalpana is probably the filly to beat in the Yorkshire Oaks 2026, though the supporting cast reads like a roll call of this year's leading three-year-old fillies.

Yorkshire Oaks 2026 Confirmations Explained

Among the Yorkshire Oaks confirmations sit Joseph O'Brien's Irish Oaks winner Johanna Walsh and the John and Thady Gosden-trained Legacy Link, who finished second at Epsom.

Ralph Beckett's improving Tattycoram, Paddy Twomey's Moody, William Haggas's Earth Shot and David Menuisier's Inis Mor round out a deep field.

Aidan O'Brien has left in a total of seven, including Diamond Necklace, although reports suggest she is more likely to run in France next.

That leaves Minnie Hauk as his standard-bearer, and she carries plenty of history into the race.

Why Minnie Hauk Wants Revenge At The Yorkshire Oaks

Twelve months ago Minnie Hauk landed this very race to complete a third successive Group One win, becoming the most recent filly to complete the Epsom Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks double in the same season.

She then went agonisingly close in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

That narrow defeat to Daryz in the Arc showed her at her peak, though she has arguably not scaled those heights this term.

Her Ascot run behind Kalpana looked like a rare flat performance, and O'Brien will want a return to form to reassert her among the elite in this Group One.

Jim Bolger brings an intriguing angle with Sparan Nua, third in the Irish Oaks and freshly placed over a mile.

He said the shorter trip seemed to suit her and that she had finished that race strongly, adding that tough races suit her better than a soft opportunity would.

Bolger's thinking looks strategic rather than simple.

He suggested a win now would open up further options later in the season given how many Group Ones arrive at that stage, and reckons she is likely to stay in training with a mile possibly suiting her better next year.

Libertango Headlines Lowther Stakes Field

The supporting card offers its own drama in the Sky Bet Lowther Stakes, a 23-strong scramble led by George Boughey's Libertango.

The Royal Ascot Albany winner was beaten in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes last time out but still arguably sets the standard, with Twomey's Big Negotiator, Ger Lyons's Livenka, Balding's Moonrise, Karl Burke's Wild Blossom and the supplemented Star Of State all in opposition.

So the picture heading into Thursday's Yorkshire Oaks 2026 at York is finely balanced.

A win would push Kalpana's tally of top-level victories to four and cement a remarkable season, while Minnie Hauk seeks redemption for that Ascot flop.

One live variable remains, since Bolger has indicated he simply will not declare Sparan Nua should she come into season, leaving that decision open right up to the wire.
