Horse Racing Speed Maps

When it comes to buying a house, the catchphrase that references the three most important factors when planning a purchase is, “location, location, location”.

In horse racing when looking for a winner, it could easily be “position, position, position”.

And that’s where the modern punting tool, the speed map, has emerged as one of the most important factors in form analysis.

What is a Speed Map?

In a betting sense, no decision on an outlay on a race should be made without consideration of two critical elements of the form analysis – the likely positions in running and the tempo (pace) of the race.

Of course, since Adam had his first bet, this has always been important, although mainly in pre-race discussions between trainers and jockeys. However, in the past 25 years, the speed map has emerged as a common and important tool.

Speed maps first became a “thing” when senior jockeys, especially in Sydney, called on form analysts to assist them in their riding strategies. Corey Brown was regarded as one of the first jockeys to master the use of a speed map when working out his race tactics.

Soon enough, as the internet became a big thing, online speed maps have become available to all punters, but some love to do their own.

According to statistics, around 60 percent of metropolitan races – average distance up to 1600m – are won by horses that are in the first six approaching the home turn.

In general terms, leaders (first and second) on metropolitan tracks win between 20 and 25 percent of the races, but the percentage drops gradually for the following horses until horses in eighth or further back win at a rate as low as 12 percent.

Most back runners require a quicker than average tempo to advantage their finishing sprint when those who have worked on the pace start to weaken.

How to Use a Speed Map

If the horse you fancy is a back-runner, knowing the tempo or speed of the race is important. Often when likely leaders are drawn wide, they must be pushed by their jockeys to work across the field. This tactic creates competition for the lead, and sometimes leaders do too much work, leaving them vulnerable to the back runners suited by the positive-negative split of the tempo of the race.

Track bias can make a speed map even more important. For instance, it was established at Flemington on Derby Day (2023), due to a strong headwind, horses racing on the pace had a distinct advantage over horses back in the field, who, according to jockey James McDonald when speaking to the media, made it difficult for those chasing to make up ground.

Having the knowledge supplied by a speed map can prove to be a boost for punters once that sort of racing pattern is established.

How to Get a Speed Map?

Punters can subscribe to analysts who supply quality speed maps or do their own by either scribbling it down on paper or by setting up a table on the computer.
