2025 F1 Tips: Hungarian Grand Prix

01/08/2025|Ed Wyatt|Formula 1 Tips & Predictions

We’ve got back-to-back Formula 1 races, with the teams in Budapest this weekend for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Hungaroring is a 4.38 km track with a tight layout that features 14 corners and very few straights. It’s F1’s second slowest track (after Monaco) and overtaking can be quite difficult.

This is the circuit where Aussie young gun Oscar Piastri got his first win last year and he comes into this race off the back of a big win in Belgium.

Piastri leads the Drivers Standings with 266 points, 16 ahead of McLaren teammate Lando Norris, who finished 2nd last weekend at Spa.

Norris has finished second the past two years at the Hungaroring and will be hungry to keep himself in the title race.

Don’t forget that last year’s race was the site of McLaren’s ‘team orders’ controversy, where Lando was asked to allow Piastri to pass him late in the race for the win.

The bottom line is that there is very little between the two McLaren drivers and cars, with on-track mistakes and strategy decisions usually the key to whoever finishes first.

Outside of the two McLarens, it gets a bit muddled. Max Verstappen – who won here in 2022 and 2023 – did win the Sprint race last week but finished 4th on Sunday.

Charles Leclerc is somehow keeping his less-than-stellar Ferrari in the hunt every week. He’s been on the podium in 4 of the last 6 races.

There is some potential for rain, which if it eventuates, would mean a third consecutive wet race.

Hungarian Grand Prix Betting Tips

Best Bet

Both McLaren Cars to finish on the Podium $1.36 (BYO Sportsbet) or Team of Winning Driver: McLaren $1.34 (Winning Driver Markets)

Once again if you’re looking for value, this may not be the bet for you. But since last week’s 1-2 finish made it 10 of 13 races for the two McLaren cars on the podium, either of these two bets still look like solid legs of a multi.

Next Best

Lando Norris $2.75 (Outright Betting)

As mentioned, Lando has finished 2nd here for the past two races. Last year team orders forced him to concede his spot to Piastri, and you wonder what might happen if a similar situation unfolds this year. Like we do most weeks, this Next Best bet and the Piastri Bet can both be interchangeable depending on who you feel has the best chance this week.

Value Bet

Pierre Gasly $4.00 (Points Finish)

I know, a bet on an Alpine car seems doomed from the start but Gasly comes into Hungary with points in each of the past two races, finishing 10th in Belgium and 8th at Silverstone. His record in Hungary isn’t great – two DNF’s and a 12th place in the past three years – but he’s a well-respected driver and if the car can continue to show improvement, this could be worth a look.

Piastri Bet

Oscar Piastri $2.50 (Outright Betting)

The championship leader returns to the track where he won his first ever F1 race. He comes in off the back of a clinical win in Belgium where he made few, if any mistakes and kept his remarkable streak of 41 consecutive grand prix finishes (3rd best ever) alive.

Hungarian Grand Prix Australian Times

Practice 1: Friday August 1, 9:30pm AEST

Practice 2: Saturday August 2, 1am AEST

Practice 3: Saturday August 2, 8:30pm AEST

Qualifying: Saturday August 2, 11:55pm AEST

Race: Sunday August 3, 11pm AEST

Odds correct at: 10:00 am AEST 01/08/2025
