Antonelli Becomes Youngest Ever F1 World Champion

Twenty years and 68 days. That is all it took for Kimi Antonelli to become Formula 1 world champion, the youngest in the sport's history, a milestone the Italian sealed at the Mexico City Grand Prix with four races still left to run in the 2026 season.
The moment that will define the day came on the podium, where Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, first and third in the all-time list of F1 race-winners, hoisted the young Mercedes driver into the air.
"Incredible," both men said of his achievement, a verdict that lands differently coming from the two most decorated drivers on the current grid.
Antonelli, for his part, was still absorbing it.
"I will definitely frame the picture and put it in my house because it's just an incredible moment," he said, adding that the respect shown by two drivers who have shaped the sport's history made it something he would always remember.
Kimi Antonelli World Champion: Becomes Youngest in F1 History
This was never meant to be his year. When Mercedes drafted him in last season to replace the departing Hamilton, plenty of observers argued the teenager was simply too raw for the demands of the top category.
For stretches of 2025, the doubters looked right. There were flashes of real talent, but the overall picture was a shaky rookie campaign that fell short of the generational hype, and his team-mate George Russell comfortably came out on top across the year.
So when it became clear Mercedes would start 2026 with the strongest car, built around a superior energy recovery system on the W17 that lifted the team above Ferrari, it was Russell, not Antonelli, who carried the favourite's tag into the season.
How Antonelli Became Formula 1 World Champion at Mercedes
What nobody had accounted for was the leap Antonelli made over the winter.
He finished the opening race less than three seconds behind Russell, then took his maiden grand prix victory in race two, the first of five consecutive wins that handed him an early grip on the title race he never relaxed.
Even once rivals clawed back Mercedes' early advantage, Antonelli kept finding the podium while Russell faded.
The gap between the two team-mates tells its own story, with Russell now sitting behind both Verstappen and Hamilton in the standings, a reversal few predicted twelve months ago.
It is worth seeing the title in that context. Had the 2025 pecking order between the pair held, this could have been a season-long scrap rather than a procession, which makes Antonelli's consistency the real headline rather than any single result.
Verstappen, Hamilton and Norris React to the New F1 World Champion
Verstappen, no stranger to winning young himself, was unreserved in his assessment.
"At his age, to be so solid, not make big mistakes, and of course also beat your experienced team-mate, he's just driven incredible," the four-time champion said, praising how the youngster had carried himself all year.
Hamilton, who lifted him onto his shoulders alongside Verstappen, said he was simply grateful to have been in the race to witness it.
Lando Norris, the outgoing champion, went further still. "He's blown everyone away," Norris said, noting that Antonelli had beaten the best drivers in the world in good cars and "made everyone else look silly."
With four rounds of the 2026 Formula 1 championship calendar still to come, the immediate question is how many more wins Antonelli can stack onto an already historic haul, and how Russell, Verstappen and Norris regroup to challenge him in 2027.
The boy from Bologna has turned a difficult debut into a breakthrough that feels less like a one-off and more like the opening chapter of an era.
If the run-in has drawn you back to the grid, it is worth knowing the mechanics before placing a Formula 1 bet on how those final rounds play out.
With the title already decided but four races still to run, those keen to bet on Formula 1 can look to how Antonelli and his chasers shape up across the closing rounds.
