The second Test has become a must-win for Australia following their embarrassing loss to Bangladesh in the first Test in Darwin. They were beaten by nine wickets, following some quite frankly abysmal batting performances.
The 2nd Test is scheduled for Saturday, August 22, with the first ball at 10:00 AEST in Mackay, QLD.
Quick Picks
Our pick: Australia to win
Value bet: Josh Hazelwood as Australia leading wicket-taker
Long shot: Steven Smith to Reach 100+ Runs
Betting Preview
The 1st Test was definitely one for Australia to forget. Except for Steve Smith’s 71, there wasn’t really much to celebrate in the first innings.
Jake Weatherald was the next best at 23, and has since been dropped. The opener was dismissed in the second innings for a three-ball duck.
Smith went on to score 44 in the second innings, as Cameron Green hit 104. Only Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey managed to score 30+ in the second innings (31 and 30).
On the flip side, it was a pretty perfect Test for Bangladesh’s Hasan Mahmud, as the seamer managed to go 6/55 in the first innings before going 3/56 in the second. Mehidy Hasan Miraz was 5/66 in the second.
As tipped, Josh Hazelwood led Australia as their leading wicket-taker, as he took 6/89 in the first before claiming the sole wicket in Bangladesh’s successful chase of 56 (1/5).
Tanzid Hasan scored 101 in the first innings from 197 balls, while he was supported by the captain, Shanto, who scored 84 from 126.
Mominul Haque was in at three before Shanto, and had scored 49, while Miraz scored 65 down the order and was in the running to be named player of the match (which went to Mahmud).
Bangladesh were without key players, which made their win much more of an upset. Nahid Rana and Shoriful Islam were both absent and are arguably their best pace options; Shoriful could return in this one after passing a fitness test.
Betting Markets to Watch
Australia have once again been made the overwhelming favourite to win, and they’ll likely be fuelled with added motivation in order to avoid a repeat of last week’s embarrassment.
All eyes will be on Matthew Renshaw , who has been called in as the replacement for Weatherald. Born in England, he has been in and out of the national setup for some time as he has struggled for consistency.
However, he plays for Queensland on the pitch in question and is the only player with two first-class centuries at the ground (scores of 135 and 170). As a result, could be worth value in the top scorer market.
As we noted in the 1st Test preview, Steve Smith is yet to score a 100 against Bangladesh . It was our long shot and with things the way they are, we think this retains its value in the betting for the 2nd Test.
Our Prediction

Once again, Josh Hazelwood to be the leading wicket-taker remains our value bet after seeing him be the only real threat that they had with the ball.
