Sandoval vs Mendoza Prediction and Betting Odds

Sandoval vs Mendoza

Ricardo Sandoval will defend his WBC World & WBA World Flyweight Titles against Sergio Mendoza following a late change of opponent.

Oscar Collazo was originally slated as his challenger, but a rib injury in training has forced him to withdraw, bringing Mexican Mendoza into the fold.

The pair will meet in Chicago in the co-main event on Sunday, October 11, from 11:00 AEST.

Quick Picks

Our pick: Sandoval to win

Value bet: Sandoval by decision

Long shot: Mendoza to win

Tale of the Tape

Sandoval’s defining strength is his forward pressure. Against Japanese fighter Kenshiro Teraji, he kept attacking the body and forcing exchanges at close range, and he’s likely going to aim to make Mendoza work hard through the middle rounds.

Mendoza’s best chance of securing a win and winning the belts will be if he can make Sandoval pay for coming in close.

He has a high stoppage rate and stands taller, so he’ll be looking to establish his jab, hold his ground and land clean counters before Sandoval gets inside.

Sandoval’s statistics are first:

  • Age - 27 vs 26
  • Height - 5'6" (168cm) vs 5'8" (173cm)
  • Stance - Orthodox vs Orthodox
  • Record - 27-2-0 vs 27-1-0
  • KO Record - 18 vs 23

Betting Markets to Watch

Despite the late change of opponent, the latest Grade A fight odds have Sandoval as a huge favourite. He’s the proven champion stepping down in opposition level, while Mendoza’s record looks more impressive than his résumé.

With there being very little value in this market, it’s worth exploring others in this fight. The method of victory is one option, and a decision victory for the champion seems plausible.

If you are newer to the sport, our guide to how to bet on boxing matches breaks down these different markets.

Sandoval is proven over championship distance, while Mendoza has stopped most of his opponents and may be dangerous early on, but was himself stopped by Thanongsak Simsri in round two earlier in the year.

Sandoval’s 12-round win over Kenshiro Teraji shows he can maintain pressure and win on the cards. If you are unsure how those scorecards work, our boxing decisions explained guide covers what SD and UD results mean.

There may be better value in the fight going the distance once odds are published compared to Sandoval by decision, so keep an eye on that.

Mendoza has a high knockout rate, which can come into play if Sandoval doesn’t treat his opponent with the right amount of respect or preparation.

Our Prediction

Check the latest Sandoval vs Mendoza betting odds.

Our prediction is a likely Sandoval win, with a decision the most likely outcome.

The long shot is in Mendoza outright. He has size and power over his opponent, and he came into the fight having prepared as the alternate following Collazo’s late withdrawal.
